                The cross shown and the one in the first picture of the soldier holding the pillow do not have the same damage IMHO.

                      Given that the front side of the cross is displayed on the pillow why can't you see the chunk of missing frame on the arm of the cross? I think bigger shots of the pillow will tell us something.

                          The cross is not original, no question. It is possibly most likely a souval post-war. The cross in the photo cannot be deciphered, no matter how good you photoshop skills are.

                            I wonder were his original award is located. A fine soldier in any case by the looks of it.

                              Either buried with him, or at the time given to his family to end-up God knows where. I do not know the luftwaffe tradition regarding the awards, whether they were buried or given to the next of kin.
