From his own side he appeared to garner personal loyalty from his men, His adjutant Georg Isecke was fiercely loyal to him in his own interrogation and his driver in Normandy also said that he would have followed him anywhere ‘because he cared for each and every one of his men’, he even forgave him for sending him back on hair raising journey to a recently abandoned HQ to retrieve an important item….which turned out to be a box of cigars!
Wünsche’s vociferous defence of AH seemed to be the reason he served four years in captivity as the Allies never found any evidence against him for war crimes, they recorded in his interrogation about Wormhoudt that “it is noteworthy, that in the extensive files, kept in this office on the infamous deeds of the 1st and 12th SS Panzer divisions, his name does not occur once in connection with any atrocity” (WO208/3662) . This clean ‘bill of health’ has been re-quoted by many to claim he was untarnished but there is evidence, never published, that he was at the scene of a war crime on the E.F., one carried out under the orders of Kurt Meyer when their two units were attached to each other in Feb ’43. He was asked about this village in his interrogation but he denied he knew it (even though the Divisional records of the LSAH have subsequently placed him there) but he was never pushed on it as the British had no intel of his involvement due to his name never being mentioned by those POWs who talked about it.
