Embroidered MGSS badge for Marine Infantry supposedly made by the firm of Thiele & Steinert. It looks ok to me.

    Thoughts?

Not that they are the last words, but neither Zienert's "Unsere Marineuniform" or Noeske & Stefanski's "Die deutschen Marinen" (two most comprehensive references we currently have) make any mention of the existence of this patch. I've seen other examples, none of which show any evidence of having been worn. I'll concede that the workmanship is nice, but have to say that there is a chance this is a fantasy piece.

Personally, I doubt it is a fantasy piece, as you'd see a lot more of them around. I think this is only the third I've ever seen in 55+ years of collecting. From what I understand, this may have been a prototype that was never issued. I've seen a regular MGSS cloth badge the same as this except with yellow embroidery in the Imperial War Museum and I have a photograph of a cloth badge being worn, which is somewhere on this thread. I know Don D. has one of these red ones, as well. So, it would be interesting to hear his opinion.

A fellow member sent me a copy of an article on these. I would still like to see a pic of one in wear but I'm leaning towards good personally.

I know this goes back a ways .... but the gun appears to be either a Russian pm 1895 or early PM 1910 Maxim on the early Sokolov mount that had not only wheels but a set of folding legs on the front.... this feature was deleted at the end of the war.... I have not heard of or seen anything relating to Russian machine gunner badges but I would point this in that direction rather than it being German....

I see no way to edit posts..... this should read PM 1905 not 1895

with what looks like a motorcycle chain around the outside, could this be
some sort of biker / fantasy piece?---Just asking.

It's actually a stylized ammo belt seen from the side rather than the top as in the German MG badge.

A little bit of MGSSA eye candy. I have approx forty issues of this magazine for the MGSSA. It is a wonder that they survived all these years.

Is there an original cloth embroidered version of this badge? I don't like the way this one looks.

This one came out of the Hershey collection several years back....Looked good then, but after reviewing all 52 pages this afternoon, I have my reservations. The closest one I've seen posted here is the bottom right piece on Post #791, but obviously missing the maker mark. Opinions?
