I'm always interested to see such photos, that show the different skull variants of my collection in wear!

I'm really sure the soldier on this photo had the skull variant with a gap between the bones on his Feldmuetze.

The next soldier wore one of the private purchased Imperial Brunswick skulls on his cap. It is a variant with very big eyes! I own other Imperial variants with smaller eyes, too! And some other skulls had only very, very small round holes in comparison with the skull, that is on the photo. The most collectors think: Not a lot of different variants were out there! But period photos showed me: They existed!

I would like to see a period photo of the skull variant with the round eyes (circle). Maybe, it is one in your album?

Question to Robin! Is it possible to see a back photo of the skull badge, that you posted in #55 (little shabraque)? I got this item and I'm not sure about it. I'm very interested to see the pin system of your badge!

                        It's just a thin 'brooch' pin...............like on a tinnie.

                            joeimwalle,

Thank you for sharing these terrific pictures.

Regarding different styles of skulls on these caps, I think that you may find that there are indeed two distinct official styles. The first, as seen in posts 43 and 128; the second is seen in post 127. Simply put, the first type is for officers while the second is for o.r.’s. I cannot speak to manufacturer’s/supplier’s variants which is especially difficult because as far as I know, they are not so marked.

The skull and bones insignia enjoys a certain appeal that has it turning up in many, sometimes strange, places; so it is very easy to confuse pieces genuinely associated with Brunswick headgear with so many others.

                            Regards,

                            Wild Card

Yes, the two main types are well known. I'm interested to find out which differences were made by the manufacturers for example different eye styles of Imperial Brunswick skulls, Wehrmacht skulls IR17 und KR13, materials etc...Sometimes it is hard to say a Imperial skull/Weimar/ Wehrmacht. One of the best possibilities is to look on the period photos. The photos show, which variants (with manufacturer differences) were worn in the period. The manufacturer catalogues are another possibility, but they are hard to find.
