Polizei West Berlin - 1950s summer service tunic

      Hello gents,

The latest add to my West Berlin police collection is this summer service tunic.
It is made of a mid heavy grey-blue cotton material and features two breast pockets, two lower pockets and shoulderstraps.
The 19mm pebbled buttons are fixed with a spring ring (as typical for summer tunics) whereas the bullion made collar tabs are machine sewn on. On both sides there are two openings for the belt hooks.
Internally the tunic has no liner and shows only shoulder paddings, belt hook straps and one single pocket with a label and a marking which have both become quite unreadable
These jackets seem to have been worn for a quite long time. In my research I found some pictures in which it is possible to see this jacket worn....
....the first picture in b&w is dated in the 1950's while the second picture is a screenshot from a footage of 1965.....
      I hope you like it

      Alex

and here the jacket worn in period pictures:

An excellent addition to your collection! From my experience this jacket is very hard to find. I am sure the trousers are even more difficult.

the trousers worn in the photos I have seen with summer tunics are the regular wool ones. Not sure, that a summer version existed?

            Regards
            Klaus

Hi everybody!! Thanks for your appreciation!

I actually share Klaus's guess about the trousers.... I do not have that much of photographic evidences but on what can be seen on the picture that I attached it is clear that the two officers are wearing the regular woolen ones. As Klaus said.

Furthermore, if we take a look to the color picture, even the Feldmütze that the guy wears is the standard one.....

So...hard to say if trousers for this tunic even existed.....

                Early Berlin Verkehrspolizei tunic

                Gentlemen,

I'd like to continue this thread along the lines of the summer uniforms posted by Alex. Specifically, on the summer tunics worn by the Vehehrspolizei. While these white tunics were of a lighter weight material than the winter uniforms they weren't as thin as some of the summer tunics worn by the Bundesluftwaffe. More along the weight and material of the moleskin material worn by the Heer.
They were four pocket tunics. Two breast pockets and two hip pockets except that right hip pocket is just a pocket cover over a slit that allows the pistol and holster to be worn outside of the tunic without the requirement of an external waist belt. There is one large interior pocket on the right breast and badge pocket at the bottom of the skirt on the right side. Of course, no German policeman would be seen without matching headgear!

                Regards,

                Gordon

The tunic and the visor cap in wear. Plus some reference pictures from my files of cap badges and arm badges worn worn by Berlin polizei.

                      Wow!!

                      Great tunic you've got there!
These tunics were worn with the regular blue trousers but I wonder if they wore shirt and tie under it or if it was only shirt with opened collar......as it was in the East German Verkehrspolizei of those years.

Is there any label inside revealing the production year?

                      cheers,

                      Alex

                        Alex,

period photos of the white jackets show the standard shirt and tie worn under it. Trousers are normally the breeches (at least with motorcycles). Gordons tunic is the 1963 model, worn until 70s.

                        regards
                        Klaus

Interesting comment. I don't know what to make of it either. The PP Bln over GB is the early mark for this polizei organization. In later years they dropped the GB. The more we study the more confusion reins!

                          Gordon
Hi Gordon, Berlin GB was Gross-Berlin up until about 1948/49 when the city was divided.

My guess is it is a Wuppertal license plate ,but I have no clue about the man in uniform .
