    James Weingartner

James Weingartner. You want detailed, scrupulously researched works you cannot top Hitler's Guard, Malmedy Crossroads of Death . and A Peculiar Crusade One of the great tragedies for students of the Second World War, partiularly of the Waffen SS, is that Jochen Peiper was assassinated just prior to being interviewed by Weingartner in 1976.

David Irving and Antony Beevor for me. Their books are just great.

            Rick Atkinson and Richard Frank

I know he has only written two works, basically, on WW2, but his stuff is probably the best I've ever read. I'm speaking about "Army at Dawn" and "Day of Battle" of course.

Another author that hasn't been mentioned is Richard Frank who has written what i consider the BEST single book on the Pacific War...namely "Guadalcanal". The guy is so good it's scary!

Perhaps the most powerful book I've read about the horror and insanity of WW2 is Gert Ledig's "The Stalin Front".

Voted for those not listed, Paul Carroll makes it seem like your right there. Rick Atkinson's "Army at Dawn" is excellent for the big picture and precise details. Robert Leckie's, "Helmet for my Pillow" is another one if You want to be in the frontlines facing the Japanese....

Am surprised no one has mentioned Liddell Harts, "The Strategy of Indirect Approach", it is one of the ulimate books on warfare, not just the WWII. Rivals Sun Tzu or Clausewitz or John Keegan on the theorys of warfare. Very much a thought provoking book....should be # 1 to read on anyones list that enjoys strategy.

"In strategy the longest way round is often the shortest way there; a direct approach to the object exhausts the attacker and hardens the resistance by compression, whereas an indirect approach loosens the defender's hold by upsetting his balance."

Who was the best WW11 author?

                              hi all,

Paul Carrell was, in my humble opinion one of the best WW2 authors; the depth of individuals personal memoirs brought his (very long and detailed) works to life.
I have only read "Hitler Moves East" and "Scorched Earth" - and both many years ago, but as a teenager with an interest in "the war" these two titles really brought the subject alive; and not just a boring history lesson.
Even to this day these books effect me, still collecting Eastern Front items above all others.
They cost me 65 pence each at the time, here in England, and after contributing to this thread I believe I will start to read them again, as I still have the original paperbacks in my collection.

                              best regards,

                              John.

I have read 2 now "The War Path", and "Dresden". I have to say he shows no love for Hitler, uses diaries and first person accounts. I don't see why he stirs up so much turmoil. I think he brings up valid points and invites the reader to draw a fair balance to the war. I know he has taken fire for the Dresden death toll, which he says could be over 500, 000. I think that is plausible since there were so many evacs in the city. A Ukrainian woman (who worked for the Red Cross) I talked to a few years ago said the toll could be even higher as most bodies were burned up. So in summary I think his research outpaces the other guys.
Last I heard he got a jail sentence for something he wrote
