I think some of the classics like the original "All Quiet on the Western Front" and "Sargent York" are some of my favorites. I don't have a particular favorite though, but I like to see ones that have been done accurately, like "Das Boot".

I watched Der Untergang a week ago and still VERY impressed, a great film!!!

Another of my favourites is the 1945 British B/W movie "The Way to the Stars".
Beautifully directed and very evocative.
Starring John Mills and Michael Redgrave.
Worth seeing if you get a chance.

Coming in late on this one, but thought I would throw my two cents worth as well, first up, I have to say that I thought 'Band Of Brothers' was amongst the best ever done, shame it doesn't rate as a movie, but in my opinion Spielberg made up for some of the hokey bits in 'Saving Private Ryan' with this mini series, and speaking of 'SPR', why do the Germans leave an MG team to guard the knocked out radar installation, and when it does get attacked, the MG team do not have any back up whatsoever, maybe the three gunners were not that well liked by their own side!

One of the greats, and it has been mentioned only a couple of times here (IMHO), is 'The War Lover', with Steve McQueen (Columbia Pictures, 1962), the beat up of his own airfield by McQueen's B-17, after dropping leaflets has to be amongst some of the best aerial footage ever screened, and their battered B-17 struggling to stay in the air at the end of the movie is great stuff as well.

A couple of other war movies that don't seem to rate much of a mention, but are great movies, 'the Enemy Below' with Curt Jurgens, and a good Aussie favourite is 'The Light Horsemen', perhaps as the opening scenes were filmed near my home town of Corryong, in Victoria (actually along the mighty Murray River at Towong) gets me a bit homesick perhaps...!!! Great movies though.

Last bit for now, and one that gets a good friend of mine and I laughing whenever we see it, is at the end of 'the Guns of Navarone' when the German sappers are using mine detectors to clear the railway line, and running their detectors over the metal railway tracks, I wonder what they are getting in their headsets??? Also like the disappearing ribbon bar on the German tunic worn by Anthony Quinn, when he rips the back off Gia Scala's (?) dress, it is only on his tunic when the camera zooms in for a close up, then it is gone again!!

(and yes, I do love the old 1969 epic 'Battle of Britain'.

Enjoying the thread, and thanks for some good memories with a few movies that I had fogotten about.

What about "Enemy at the Gates"?

What about it? It is a purile pile of dog s**t. For starters the director is trying to pass it off as a real story. Give me a break ! If it was for real it would have been in the daily reports that went across Stalin's desk, that is how much importance such things had. At least they tried to convey that mood. There is no official record of this duel, and I defy anyone to come up with the report. This is whta we call in the Navy a "s**t buzz" or a "water cooler rumour".
And the extras at the end? The actors had no idea. Ed Harris was talking about his character, and stated he was in the Waffen-SS. He was a mountain trooper. I bought it 'cause a lot of people said it was realistic. I had to buy a bed pan just so I could sit through it. I didn't know wether to s**t or spew.

I will add that this is a very Hollywood film, with numerous liberties taken for the sake of the story. Whether such a duel even took place between snipers is still in debate. The Soviets said it happened but there is no record of the events on the German side. My feeling is that it was Soviet propaganda.

But I'll add that films like Enemy at the Gates, as well as Wind Talkers among others, have some redeeming value in that they're telling history. Many people just aren't interested in history that much, and these films tell stories that might spark interest and in the case of Enemy at the Gates help show that WWII wasn't just fought in Normandy by Tom Hanks.

I wonder why anybody hasn't mentioned "Darkblue World". Not sure if this it's english title, but that's how it should be translated.

A beautiful Chech movie about Chechoslovakian pilots during WW2. The plot is somehow similar to the "Pearlsh'''t" Hollycrap movie, but the way it is told and the uncomparably higher niveau of Chech cinema than that of the Hollyweird makes it one of the best films I have ever seen. And there is no idiotic happy-end - that's the way the war has ended for many in our part of the old world. A good thing to teach our western neighbours that not all Allies were the winners in this war...

Not to mention the air combat scenes that were made with true Spits (although the computer generated Heinkels were not always too brilliant looking).

A wonderful film about the cynical waste of life inflicted on the front line soldier during WW1.

That is a great film, and you notice you never see any German soldiers in the movie...hence the theme of "who is the real enemy."

good film title not known

Does anyone know the title of this film,i seen it years ago but i dont know what its called,il describe it,see if anyone knows what the film was called.the film is either russian or german with english subtitles,the germans are retreating and commiting war crimes,theres a scene where they burn a church,barn,people in it.a young woman and boy watch the germans,the young woman is abused,they escape then later bump into russian soldiers who have captured some germans.they take revenge,this is a very graphic film.i would like to see this film again,not knowing the title makes that a bit difficult.thanks simon

That sounds like Come and See. It is a Russian film from 1985.

The finnish black/white movie "Unknown Soldier" after the book with the same title written by Väinö Linna is my choice.
