Favorite War Movies

Hello,
My favorite War Movie is hardm becuae I am torn between the original All Quiet on the Western Front, Lawrence of Arabia and Das Boot. But I also love the following films:

The Desert Fox (hey James Mason is wearing Rommel's real tunic in that one)
Zulu (my wife's favorite)
The Bridge on the River Kwai
The Great Escape
The Longest Day
The Blue Max
The Bridge at Remagen (Robert Vaugn the German wearing shades-cool)
Cross of Iron
The Eagle has Landed
Gallipoli
Saving Private Ryan

For dumb fun, I really enjoy Kelly's Heroes.

"Das Boot" has to be my own personal favourite war film. Gritty, action packed and simply addictive (cannot remember how many times I have watched it now!) but thankfully without hollywoods 'tackiness'. But, that isn't to say.....Stalingrad, Cross of Iron, The Blue Max, All Quiet On The Western Front and A Bridge Too Far are also great in their own rights, but "Das Boot" remains the no 1. I personally would like to see a producer/director show enough balls to make an objective film about the career of Jochen Peiper, there is enough detail in his character and career to make an epic !

Well, I can't make up my mind here, but here are my faves, in no particular order:

All quiet on the Western front (Real one, not the crap remake)
Wings
Hells Angels
The Grand Illusion
Sieg im Westen (hehe)
Die Bruecke (I love the real noises, from MG echos to gas mask cans clanking)
Patton
Battlefields (Battlegrounds? Early 50s About the Bulge)
The Train
Dark Blue World
Das Boot

And for sheer amusement I love to watch anything with Richard Burton, whether its Raid on Rommel or Where Eagles Dare.

I generally despise computer generated planes, especially the car chase ground hugging planes from Pearl Harbor, but the generated stuff from Dark Ble World was believable and well done...

I personally think that no war movie will ever be as good as Die Brücke. Even though it was made a decade after the war, I think that it was the best movie to portray the war on the german perspective.

Stalingrad??? WHICH ONE?

Stalingrad (1992)-German- thumbs up

Stalingrad, Dogs, you want to live forever (1958)- German- Thumbs up

Attack and Retreat aka Italiano Brava Gente..Italian (1965)-Italy's POV of Russian front and Stalingrad..thumbs up-you will notice 1993 version of Stalingrad copied alot of this film...also all of pictures of Peter Falk on DVD are from other movies(anzio and one I don't know?) not this film..

So three Stalingrads all must see

Jody, your 98% correct. You forgot "Zulu Dawn" and BATTLE OF THE BULGE! Yes, I know many of you on the forum think Battle of the Bulge sucks, but when the Germans sing the Panzer song it makes me want to attack!!

Wow, I can't believe I've missed this thread for so long.
My favorites:

1. Das Boot--accuracy to the tee, realistic characters, and a great, deep (no pun intended) plot. I just watched it again tonight and was still mesmerized by it (after how many times?).
2. A Bridge Too Far--It covers a bit too much material for a single movie, but it is still one of my favorites, and what a cast!
3. Breaker Morant--One of the best war dramas ever made.
4. Thin Red Line--I honestly don't know why so many people don't like this one. I think it is a fantastic account of Guadalcanal from the perspective of a thoughtful and not-so-young soldier. It is SO much better than SPR.
5. Apocalypse Now--It may not be the most realistic movie in many ways (not the point, I don't think), but the Wagner and the Helicopters of the 9th just gives me chills.
6. Patton--George C Scott and George S. Patton are nearly the same guy as far as I can figure after seeing the former's performance as the latter. (I wish they would have used WW2 tanks and not M48's--oh well.)
7. Gallipoli--The soundtrack is the only part that's kind of cheesy here (reminds me of Chariots of Fire), but I love the story and the acting. It is too sad to watch very many times though...
8. Zulu--Michael Caine is great in this--how many Zulu extras did they have to recruit do you think?
9. The Great Escape--One of my favorite movies of all time, but not necessarily a great war movie, hence it is number 9. Steve McQueen on a BMW motorcycle trying to hop his way into Switzerland under fire--tough to beat!
10. Midway-- I loved this movie ever since I was a kid. Horrid love story in there, but some great combat scenes with real archival footage, more often than not.

Wait a minute how could I forget:
Come and See -- A Russian movie about partisans and the SS. If you watch this, prepare to be depressed. A very realistic movie on many levels in my opinion.

Blackhawk Down, for its realism.

I went to school with one of the rangers involved in the real "Blackhawk Down" story (Mike Goodale), so I really had a personal interest in the events that it depicts......Good movie.
A lot of people have mentioned "Midway" but what about "TORA TORA TORA"?
Stalingrad is my personal fave, followed by the first twenty minutes of "Saving Private Ryan"(followed by the rest of "Saving Private Ryan")
Back to Bataan is another good one,

Das Boot by far is the best. What about this movie, Die Brucke ? I haven't seen it

Also from my favourite list, Pvt Ryan (especially the beginning), The Thin Red Line ( ), and, from Vietnam, Full Metal Jacket (the title in portuguese is "Born to Kill") and Apocalispe Now. Not a "war" movie properly, but the Schindler List is also very good.

I don't like the 60's and 70's war movies. Poor effects and for each allied soldier dead, a thousand nazis downed.

If you include TV series in this list...Band of Brothers

1943 - The Fallen Sparrow...about a unit flag

Ok since J missed the good movies , please mention them...

My favorite is the 1943 movie "The Fallen Sparrow", with John Garfield - about a military unit flag, only problem is you never actually see the flag, but the spirit behind such flags is well addressed! That being to never surrender ones unit flag no matter the cost.............OldFlagsWanted.com

The Odd Angry Shot...
Following the Vietnam tour of a Squadron of the Australian SAS in 1967, this is a truly well plotted and paced film. The filmmakers enlisted the aid of the real Australian SAS in the making of the feature and their professionalism shines through, particularly in the action sequences. From the leaving of their native land in a spirit of optimistic naivete, through the disillusionment of vicious jungle warfare against a professional and dangerous enemy, the film concentrates on the human side of the young soldiers' experiences. This is, in my opinion, one of the very best films ever made on the subject of the Vietnam War. Of particular note is the use of low camera angles and lack of gratuitous violence to convey the claustrophobic and mentally challenging nature of fighting a foe who only appears briefly and at long intervals. Humour is not left out of the film, either. Many of the 'off duty' moments are shot through with the crazy humour of men in a desperate situation. With small touches of 'extra-realism', such as the British Squadron Sergeant Major ( many British soldiers emigrated to serve in the Australian Army in the 1950s and '60s)this is a film that shows the futility of soldiers fighting an unpopular war, whose priorities quickly change to simple survival. Top Film!!
