Assuming that this helmet is related to National Geographic nazi grave robbers programme and that it might have been found in a grave, the helmet is given all sorts of praise in that thread. I wonder will opinions change if we find out that Gottlieb found it in the same place as that human skull that he is pictured holding.

Imagine if in Season 2 Gottlieb and team head off to the pacific to dig up dead American soldiers, you know for science?

Maybe they can do a seasonal 'Battle of the Bulge' Christmas special ? Focusing on American remains for a change. Give Craig & the chuckleheads a chance to try out some santa costumes.

And then they can pop over to North Africa to dig up some 'tommies'

Here is the removed NG trailer

Look at that guy almost laughing at the end talking about a soldier who was blown up and buried. I am sure lots of science is going on here. They cant even tell which human bones go where, please dont tell me that any of these looters is actually trained.

Well the thread (from 2013) title is: Ground Dug in Latvia
And from Craig Gottlieb we read:
            Code:
I'll bring it home and decide what to do with it.
            as well as:
            Code:
I also brought back two Russian mortar tails
Maybe not related, maybe just coincidence, lets not be too quick to judge

This is damage limitation and I have seen some speculation that the programme may never air.

                http://conflictantiquities.wordpress...ottlieb-quote/

The article claims that National Geographic US HQ knew little about the programme and speculates that it may never be shown. I would imagine that NG are horrified by the reception thats its got. As of 3.30 pm GMT they removed the images from the website too.

This video will reappear on the net, probably within the next few hours. These things tend to gain steam when they are banned from Youtube

The images of Gottleib using a woodern stick to pull human remains from the ground and then one of the 'talent' having to hold back the laughter while saying that the soldier was blown apart were horrific. I wonder why they censored it.

This is the worst example of how low national Geographic have sunk with quazi reality tv. I wonder if there will be explosions like in "American Diggers" and Gottlieb shouts "boom baby" or "Nazi baby" when he discovers a grave

At least he is showing great respect for these items making candlesticks out of them! You know... "ultra modern" look dug with care and turned over to a museum my A$$, Traveled home through Finland to avoid customs problems. wonder what NatGeo would think of this?

                  Kevin

The best quote from Craig. "For the helmet, I'll probably leave it alone. Cleaned, it'll look like a junky helmet. Rusted out, it looks like what it is ... a helmet found in the Kurland Pocket!" Disgraceful!!! Junky helmet, tell us what you really think!?

A quote from that link sums it up in nutshell:

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL BACKGROUND ON NAZI WAR DIGGERS

National Geographic Channel’s series Nazi War Diggers investigates history at the sites of some of the most intense battles of World War II. Unfortunately, a video excerpt from our show posted on our website did not provide important context about our team’s methodology. This series operates in direct conjunction with organizations officially licensed to excavate battlefield sites and adhered to their procedures. All of the excavation featured in the series, including handling of human remains, was supervised by representatives from these organizations, which act under the authority of their country’s government and are also backed by the official German and Russian war graves commissions.

Our team’s operation is in direct contrast to illegal digging and looting of battle sites, commonly referred to as “black digging,” which is a real and ongoing concern in these areas. Despite misinformation being circulated, our show will in fact demonstrate the need for the activities portrayed to be done in an authorized and legal manner. This will be a point of emphasis in the opening of each show, and the series will be complemented by a robust website further exercising this point.

In addition, during filming, our production crew remained in close contact with local museums, including the Latvian War Museum. All relics uncovered by the team were cataloged and photographed and are now in safe storage. Items have been offered to museums. No items were trafficked or sold. The human remains found in the series will be reburied with due ceremony in military cemeteries under the supervision of the relevant war graves commissions.

(Translated) Statement from Talis Esmits, leader of the military archaeology team Legenda, the official Latvian digging organization authorized to recover World War II MIAs by the German and Russian war graves commissions: “The National Geographic team worked at all times under the supervision of Legenda, which operates under permission from the government of Latvia and Brotherhood Cemetery Committee to recover missing soldiers of the Second World War. Digging without authorization and disruption of remains and means of identification is a persistent problem at battle sites across Eastern Europe. I can confirm the sites featured in the series are not designated to be of national cultural heritage interest and protected, and can be excavated under official license. The licenses were given by Brotherhood Cemetery Committee, which is acting based on intergovernmental agreement between Latvia and Germany, and Latvia and Russia. All these licenses were registered in local municipalities and agreed with landowners.”

(Translated) Statement from Tomasz Czabanski, President of Pomost archaeological association in Poland: “Pomost Association is an organization dedicated to Polish-German reconciliation. We work on behalf of German People’s Union for Care of War Graves from Kassel (VDK). The work we do is on their behalf and for their benefit. These jobs are carried out under existing permits in Poland from the Polish official authorities. These jobs are carried out by the members of our association including archaeologists and historians. The episode for National Geographic relating to work in Poland was filmed with our consent, in accordance with the permit issued by the Volksbund (VDK) press department from Kassel. The works were carried out under our constant supervision and according to Polish procedures."

Given the title, it is a lame attempt to attract viewers by tossing "Nazi" in there, although that might actually better describe the diggers themselves and not their subjects...

The title is completely idiotic and actually speaks volumes about what audience they are trying to reach, and all the damage control drivel they are responding with implies they think everyone is an ignorant simpleton.

I grew up watching NG and the nonsense they now put out is a sad testament concerning the state of the English speaking world.

"National Geographic Channel’s series Nazi War Diggers investigates history at the sites of some of the most intense battles of World War II"

Well as I said in previous posts, I look forward to them digging up dead Brits, Americans, Austrailians, Russians and Japanese in season 2 since we fought some "intense" battles in WW2 as well. No........ not going to do that because you would create a political incident ? But its ok to dig up German soldiers?

"All relics uncovered by the team were cataloged and photographed and are now in safe storage" Thats a lie, we already know that a helmet and motar rounds were exported via Finland to aviod customs thanks to a Gotleib post.

They said a video showed the programme out of context......IT WAS THEIR VIDEO and Why did they remove all the gallery photos of Gotlleib messing about with a Human skull is everything was honourable

Are they trying to tell me that a professional was watching them rip open graves and dig soldiers out with sticks and shovles? The only professional there was the professional liar and conman Gottleib.

I have read that he was a major in the US Marines, how would he and his family feel if he was killed in combat, his body never recovered only for some entitled prick and his idiot mates to dig him up and sell his equipment.

I want to see the German Government step in to stop this being aired, because at the very least it will encourage people to go digging up graves

All the video can be seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdMBkkTfWDI a youtube commentator is discussing it. Video at end

Closest combat scenario's for the man include a bathroom stall in Louisville, and a French restaurant at this years S.O.S. I am not sure of the medal designations for these, possibly the " The Order of the Snail " and the " Urinal Combat Clasp/w Toilet Tart Star "
