Visiting the Ligne Maginot (Part 2): The Fort Fermont

The german army launched its offensive against The Netherlands,
Belgium, Luxembourg and France on May 10, 1940.
Three days later they passed the border defenses of Sedan and
continued heading towards Dunkerque and Paris.

They did not attack the Ligne Maginot, in fact only the Fort
de Ferté close to Sedan was attacked.
However as of June 13, the attacks on the fortifications of the
Saarland, Rheinland-Pfalz and Montmedy area started with heavy
    artillery fire.

On June 17, Bloc 4 of the Fort de Fermont was attacked by two
88mm guns. On the 21st , Bloc 1 was attacked with heavy artillery
fire. All these attacks were not successful.
With the surrender of the french army on June 25, the forts of
    the Ligne Maginot surrendered too.

    Fort Fermont

The Fort de Fermont (official denomination A2) is located between
Longwy and Longuillon, close to the borders of Belgium, France and
    Luxembourg.
It was built from 1931 to 1936. Its mission was to stop any german
attack jointly with some 50 other forts and more than 1000 blockhouse
    and casemates.
Modernization works were still going on in 1940 when the german
    started the attacks.

The fort consists in 7 Combat blocs, a staff entrance and an ammunition
    entrance.

600 soldier were doing their duty at the fort in 1940, commanded
    by Capitaine Aubert.

Visiting Fermont is making a breathtaking two-hour visit, getting
you underground in the heart of the fort and outside, in the middle
of the defense blocks still showing traces of the 1940 fights.

Additional and detailed inormation can be obtained on the
fort's website where this information has been gathered too:
