Here are most of us who took part in the march. The girls drove the Jeeps as support vehicles for any "walking wounded".

Well guys that concludes my photo tour for this year.

Our trip finished the day after these pics were taken. The trip home was completed safely and we were back home in Derbyshire at 12.30am Tuesday morning after that long drive home, non stop, (bar to top up the fuel tank with the Jerrican) from Harwich.

Fuel costs were a killer this year due to the very high petrol prices and only getting 20 to the gallon in the Jeep.

The trip was really enjoyable (as usual) and already we are planning next year.

        Cheers, Ade.

          Excellent Ade,
I really enjoy seeing these pictures!

If any of those girls in uniform are comimg next year I'll take my boots off half way

Btw, maximum temperature on 19 september 1944 was 21.4C, so you got a good impression what it is like to march for miles.
          Cheers, Luc

Fantastic stuff Ade I've really enjoyed your thread.

Do you know AL well? - He seems like a totally sound bloke, and for my money, one of the funniest men on the planet.
I'm very curious regarding the kilted para, I've never seen that before.Any story there?

                Thanks,

Hi Guys thanks for the comments.

Hi Johannes, I know one of the few licenced metal detectorists in the area, but things can be found by simply field walking the battlesites. As always though: Safety first!

Hi behblc, the march is hard work but great fun. It is actually one of highlights of the trip for me each year. All the pouches are full, as is my small pack with all it's contents.

Hi Colin, the funny thing was on the Saturday afternoon when we left the Airborne cemetery, we passed a car with Dutch plates and the driver grinned at us. I remarked to Don that the driver looked just like Al Murray. No way, I thought then about 2 hours later we met him in the street. I had never met him before but he is a really nice chap, not a "star" at all and very knowledgeable about the battle. Did you see the TV programmes he did going around WW2 battlefields in Jeep? Funny thing is a mate of mine now owns that Jeep. A right bag of bolts it is too! Al said "god help him" as well when I told him.

The kilted Para does have a story. The lad in the photo is Ramon who is a Dutch friend of mine. Another Police Officer. Quite a few Policemen belong to the group which really does have it's advantages. He nearly always wears a kilt as he is very much into Scots Regt's.
In fact, there were two men who wore kilts at Arnhem in the battle. Both were Glider Pilots. They were both in D Squadron. Lt. Lieutenant K.F. Strathern, Intelligence Officer, ā€˜Dā€™ Squadron, wearing Cameron Dress pattern kilt, and Captain James Ogilvie, commander of D, wearing a Gordon Highlander tartan kilt. There is a well known photo I can scan if you wish to see it? Sadly the kilt may have been the death of Capt Ogilvie, as he drowned attempting to swim the Rhine.

Hi Ashley, as a fellow Jeep owner you know the trails and tribulations of owning a 60 odd year old vehicle. But when all is going well, you cannot beat it

Hi Theo, I always enjoy doing a thread about my trip as it brings back great memories.

                      Cheers, Ade.

That is new to me Ade, in one book I have they are mentioned Royal Artillery.
All other books obviously claim they're paras

Hi Luc, the confusion with RA is most likely because the famous photo shows them with the CRA (Commander Royal Artillery)

                          Cheers, Ade.

I would have been very chuffed to have bumped into Al like that.Great stuff.
Unfortunately I missed the series with him in it,I heard it was pretty good and I'll hopefully catch it again on one of the sky channels. Thanks for the link to his site, thats some jukebox!

I embarrisingly just realized I was at an event last year and one of the living history guys was wearing the kilt, because he was playing Captain Ogilvie and had the red beret!..silly me.
Thanks for jogging my memory with the story.

                              Top stuff

                                Hi Ade,

As always, a wonderful thread. Thanks for posting, I've been waiting to see it. Looks like you had an awesome time as always.

Yes I heard you met my friend Tom Timmermans from Eindhoven. He is usually dressed as a US 101st Screaming Eagle for the celebrations in Eindhoven, but I know he had a great time joining your crew in Arnhem this year. Tom took a lot of pictures as well and I have been fortunate to see many of them. I'll let him post them if he wishes, but I had to share to following to with you at least.

First is you and Tom... definately having fun.
