Climbing the Obersalzberg Video
Hey Guys,
Great thread! My son and I visited Bravaria and the Berchtesgaden area in June of 2013, staying at the spectacular Intercontinental Berchtesgaden, located on the former Göring property on the Obersalzberg. My first choice was the zum Türken hotel, but for our travel dates, they were booked.
As I said, the accommodations were 5 stars, really over the top! They even have a turn down service!
If you stay there, its a must to request a room with a view...
Some photos from the hotel early in the morning:
And of course Berchtesgaden is wonderfull!
A short drive north from Berchtesgaden is the little town of Bad Reichenhall where tucked away you will find the former Gebirgs-Artillerie-Kaserne (for mountain artillery troops) now called the Hochstaufen-Kaserne, still used by the Bundeswehr:
The eagle on the building no longer clutches the Swastika, but just as proudly an edelweiss flower. The mural on the wall is still there, basically just as it was during the war. Quite a site!
And a short video of the drive up the Obersalzberg from Berchtesgaden and the second one below driving down!
We drive right past the Berghoff, at least the former site, the Zum Türken then pull into the hotel and drive up
Göring Hill. Basically, this was his driveway! The video going down shows the same route, but a different perspective.
Click on the link below for the video:
And the video heading down.
Cheers

I’m sorry but I would never stay in that monstrosity of a hotel. How they could build such a modern pile of trash in such an historic area, I do not wish to understand. I used the enjoy walking around the Goering hill area and searching for pieces of blue swimming pool tiles, and they were easy to find. Much better to stay in a friendly family B&B in Berchtesgaden than a faceless Intercontinental that you can stay in any city in the world! Totally out of keeping for the area, such a shame it was allowed to be built.

Well, its there now and i don't think its going anywhere anytime soon. We wanted to be able to walk around the area at our whim and plan some day trips, so it was a great base for that. I would have no objections to staying there again.
It is totally out of place for such a historic area, but its not the same as any faceless Intercontinental you can stay at in any city, its on the Obersalzberg. The staff are all locals and are wonderful and so friendly. Im sure they are happy.
Different strokes for different folks.
I guess we all wish that most of the original buildings and structures were still there, but unfortunately they are not for many reasons.
