I know it sound weird but we made a short cut throught the cemetary and could not believe all the period memorials inside the wall facing the main street of all the local boys who did not return from WW1 and WW2! Most had pictures on the memorials and some families lost 3 sons in different branches on the eastern front!

Not weird at all. It is a beautiful cemetery, and has some great history. Yes, there are many individual monuments embellished with photos and kriegsmotiven. In most cases, the remains are not interred there, as the fallen were buried on the eastern front.

About 2 km from the town center is also the Soldatenfriedhof. The environs are stunning of course, but the aesthetic of the place itself is very subdued. Nevertheless, a nice place to go to reflect and to muse on the history.

It is built like an amphitheater. This is taken from neat the top, looking down to the entrance.

Great photo Mr. Hopkins! Unfortunately I can't tell you where exactly that photo was taken, but that does appear to be Der Watzmann in the background. It is a prevalent landmark in those parts!

This is a private photo from a large WSS document group that I own. The man served in the Westland regiment, was severely wounded and eventually transferred to serve in the SS Wachkompanie Obersalzburg. I assume this photo was taken there, and I wondered if those of you w/ a first hand knowledge of the place could identify exactly where...

A few soldiers seem to be looking at something or someone slightly higher than the road.....it would be nice to think they were marching in front of the Berghof to the left of the photo but I do not think the outlines of the mountains in the background are correct for that.

Great pictures BAV, and it is a wonderfull cemetary. I had the feeling there it must not be unusual to see people taking photos/video of these memorials as the caretaker didnt take any notice at all. I cant wait to go back again, it really is a great little town with a little bit of history! regards Johnno.

Thanks for the participation and sorry to not have been around more lately. The last few years have been, well, unstable.

Here's a nice shot I came across. This is a view from the Eagle's Nest facing north. Just to the left of the glass of beer, the white spot is what was left of the SS barracks in '04. If you continue to the left you will see the golf course with its "water hazards" (bomb craters).

All of that appears to be at the same level, but there are actually big step downs from the SS baracks to the golf course and then on down to the valley and road below.

Just got back from a 2 week tour of Germany including Nurnberg, Salzberg (OK Salzberg is in Austria), Munich, and, of course, Berchtesgaden. We stayed at the Turken for 4 nights (pricy but WELL worth it) so we could do the Grand Tour of TR sites on the "O" as well as the Konigssee, and a salt mine. It is possible to get to everywhere by bus...taxi is a little more convenient and not too much more than the bus for more people (there were 4 of us) but we only used cabs two times in the 4 days we were there. We even walked down to Berchtesgaden one morning. If I can ever figure out how to send pics I'll post a few. One incident pretty much sums up the locals there. On the last night we were at the Turken I discovered we had lost our camera. All of our pics (over 300) were gone. The next morning on our cab ride down to catch the bus the driver said that 95% of all lost items get returned in "B". I thought he was just blowing smoke but when I checked the little "news stand" store in the train station it was there...with a few new pics including a shot of a kid maybe 12-13 years old smiling right back at me. My only guess is that I left the camera on the seat where I was sitting when we got the bus back to the T for the night...the kid found it, took some pics and then put it on the counter in the news stand.

After the trip of a lifetime my advise is Go Now. Don't wait for the exchange rate to get better...pack up and get there while there is something to see...try and stay at the Turken if you can and get a "view" room with a balcony....be prepared to do lots of walking and research the area before you go...but GO.

That's a pretty good hike, and I bet it was even moreso on the way back up!

Has anyone seen whether or not the ruins of the Kampfhäusl are still there, on the little slope just across the street from where the General Walker Hotel (Platterhof) used to be; pretty much across from the driveway that goes down to the Dokumentation Center?

The little house where AH first lived when he got out of Landsberg in 1924, and where he finished writing "Mein Kampf." The foundation used to still be there, as seen in the lower right here.

Hello,

I was there two weeks ago. Very very good weather.

I've found some relics just at the bottom of the Berghof's retaining wall cut into the hill, just to the rear of the house.
Some pieces of the camouflage netting that was put on many of the buildings, in a futile effort to shield them from aerial reconnaissance.
