Absolutely incredible guys. Since this thread is a few years old, are there any new updates on construction, deconstruction, or other updated information on the area and the people? New adventures?

When I was there in September, the Frau told all of us that last year was her last season open. I have heard recent tales that she is booking rooms again for this year - but I have not confirmed the rumors. When we talked to her about what would happen to the Hotel, she could not (or did not want to . . ?) say - all she mentioned is that "she was tired of fighting". I assumed she was speaking of the Bavarian Government. I speculate that some day, when the Frau decides it's time to take a break, they (the Bavarian Government) will assume control of the property, and eventually do the same thing as they did above and up the road. But this is all speculation - who really knows what will happen?

I hope someone that is close to the Frau will let us all know what is currently in the works - I for one would like to return some day, but after seeing how tired the Frau was of working, I fear that time is very limited . . .

I went there last year in July and Frau told me that she had big issues with the government, because they want the property and build a new hotel just like they did with the Goering property. The German government is redoing the whole mountain to make it a big tourist place. Because the Turken hotel is private property they can't do anything. In fact, it is her house!

I recently made reservations for the 15th of september this year so if anybody wants to join for a little sight-seeing feel more than welcome. I know a couple of nice places to see, including the second reichskanzlerei with a big eagle on the front door.

I will create a new thread soon for it.

                Regards.

As the Germans would put it.... "you Tommies were too frightened to bomb us in the daytime".

                  Sorry Marcus!
                  ;-)

Cheeky so and so, arh but you see, we predominantly bombed by night, you guys during the daylight hours.

You Americans couldn't even hit it when your saw it, so we had to do the job properly and of course show you how it was done (He says )

In other words, 50/50 by guess and by god and we were lucky that time ....you chose a one in million raid

                  Take care,

                  Marcus

Tim the next time I walk the dog, I'll take some pic's of Grafton Underwood were the first and last bombs were dropped by the 8th, Ilve right next to it.<!-- / message --><!-- attachments -->

Tim...you might be interested to know that after reading your outstanding thread I have decided to fulfill a lifelong dream and visilt the Obersalzberg. I decided that I'm not getting any younger (I'm 65) and the area is becoming more and more unrecognizable with the passing of years and the leveling of historic structures. Thanks for building a fire under me.

I am sure you will enjoy it. My advice would be to stay at the Turken if you can and read a few books / get some maps / see http://www.thirdreichruins.com so you get to see the hidden and less known things

                        O Berg

Thanks Tim and Terry for the advise. I have spent considerable time on the thirdreichinruins site. Can either of you recommend any books that I should read prior to my trip? Thanks.

I used the "After the Battle" magazines and also "The Third Reich - then and now" , book by Le Tissier (also from After the Battle)

                            English Magazine Review

The English Magazine 'Homes & Gardens' in November 1938 published a review of 'Hitlers Mountain Home'....... "There is nothing pretentious about the Führer's little estate. It is one that any merchant of Munich or Nuremberg might possess in these lovely hills."

Scroll down on this website to see it... it makes for fascinating reading!

A few photos of a seldom seen area on the Obersalzberg: The theater. The size of the sentry gives an idea of the scale.
