Finished Display Cases.

Hi all,
At Jay V's request I am posting my display cases here
Instead of posting on Jay V's thread and hijacking it, I'll start my own.

I will start with one of my favorite woods, Leopard wood.
This wood has a unique characteristic in that after being sanded
completely smooth, and once polyurethane is applied, it "blisters" the grain in the wood.
The end grain looks like snake scales and after the "blistering" it almost feels like
snake skin. Nothing else I have worked with has this characteristic. Truly amazing.

The next case I am showing is made of
Zebra wood. It has a wide sweeping end grain pattern with a tight striped face grain. The uniqueness of this wood comes in the iridescent ripple pattern within the grain

I like to find oddities in the wood I select.
Here is a not-so-typical piece of Cherry. I was told it was figured, but
I believe it to be from a funky part of the tree, maybe where it could have been
damaged and healed. I think these pieces make these cases so very unique. You'd have a hard time finding a piece that looks like this:

Here is a Black Walnut case which was made for Aff96 (Greg) and his picture actually as well as a case made from Jatoba which is also Greg's case

Thanks for the compliments Jay.
The Cherry one I liked so much that I'm keeping it
for myself and it houses my Mothers cross collection.
I agree the Zebra wood is really nice, but very, expensive wood, not near as
much as say Ebony or Tulip wood, but it isn't as cheap as Oak, that's for sure and for certain.
I should be getting pics of the Maple cases today, I'll see if I can post them today.

Hi Jay,
Here is the Tiger Maple case. sorry it took so long to get these pics.
My computer for some reason will not download my memory card.
I also have a birds eye maple, but can't seem to find those pics right now.
I also have a figured Birch case that will take your breath away and will get pics just as soon as I can.
Here is the Tiger Maple. Smooth as glass. Not bad for only 4 coats of Poly.

Hi Jay,
That's just it, it's not the grain of the wood, it's called figuring, and I'm not sure what causes the tree to grow that way. You can actually feel those ripples in the wood before sanding, and after enough sanding it's just as smooth as glass.

As for padding I'm not really sure what the others are using, but what I use is a polyurethane padding 1 inch thick and a foam backed felt 1/8 inch thick. It probably is what most case manufacturers use, but I don't know for sure.
You can use archival safe materials inside the cases, just cut to fit.
I will show more cases as they are finished.

That Cherry wood in your post # 3 is just fantastic.

What a beautiful material to work with that wood is.

That flame / marble structure of the wood gives such an intense warmth.

Thanks Eric-Jan for your kind compliments. That case is one of my favorites, so much so that I have decided to keep it for my Mothers Cross collection. I have tried to find another piece like it, but I'm thinking I won't be finding it anytime soon or even at all.
