    Tim,

A possible answer to your question as to why someone would do this; pride.
Identifying yourself as being part of a select group is why anyone would do this kind of thing. Perhaps it was done after being absorbed into the Rifle Regiments. We will never know.

    Regards,

    Mark

I think whoever made these takes great pride in fooling wishful collectors.

          Agree Mark

When the MG Bn's cadre were attached to the two Pz Gr Regt's in Oct '41. That would be the time to recognise the unit's history. & also agree We will never know for sure.....

Besides the cyphers, the "field repairs" to the piping looks contrived imo. Would like to get a hands on, but for now, I too would hold on to them

At any rate, I like the basic straps but find the piping unfamiliar looking and with odd distressing and "period repairs". Perhaps wool piped tropical straps that had moth damage to the piping became candidates for this treatment. They are interesting looking but I can't seem to shake this nagging suspicion.
Perhaps you are referring to the work of Peter Hassinger ?

Certainly looks to be his "designed to trick" type of thing,

Thank you Chris, this is exactly the fellow I had in mind. Of course I can not with any certainty say the lime green MG straps are his work but they give me that impression. I see too many red flags; that the straps are embroidered at all is weird but if so then why not the unit number? I have never seen MG battalion cyphers in green on any straps and don't recall ever seeing the "M" by itself. The piping looks overly distressed (and what is it, wool ,rayon? It looks like cotton) with reenforcement stitches that I have never seen before on any worn straps. I apologize to the owner if I have heaped unwanted critcism on his straps, but to me they appear to be "fantasy" creations..

I agree, it is interesting that there is so much damage/ repairs to the piping from wear ?/ insects ?/ rodents ?. Yet there appears to be no wear or damage to the embroidered "M". Close ups of the weave to the "M" would help confirm this of course. Also Peter Hassingers stuff has quite distinctive stitch pattern to it.

I would also love to be able to believe in them but it could be a case of "if it is too good to be true".

Having a second look, may be there is damage to the "M". We need a good close up,

                  Chris

It's really a shame, that's really rare things that no one knows with some few Declaration as a copy
the shoulder strap since 1945 came back to light -
                      and now they're a copy?

Thank you that collect is really fun-- for me it is enough
I'm sorry for my English, but it is too difficult to go ahead here in English
for the ones that it is a copy as you then a original (like textbook)??

Helmut, I stand by my opinion that these straps were most likely period field embroidered by a proud German Afrika Korps soldier who had time on his hands in the field ..

GAF, thanks for sharing the ring, nice piece ..

                          Helmut,

                          Another thought,

The work on the cypher could also have been carried out by a POW, also with time on his hands.

Is there any section of the piping that remains relatively undamaged? That would be of interest.

The work of "Peter Hassinger" have improved steadily over the years. At first his "imitations" were quite crude and easy to detect. But his later attempts have improved. If you look at some of the threads on his "imitations" the stitch pattern has also evolved to looking much better than when he first began. Some are somewhat similar to these straps. Can't say with any certainty as to these straps at this point.
