Not a standard Rommel Afrika uniform, which were privately made pieces. This one has been discussed on the forum previously. Some believe it may be an example worn on Rommels quick return to Africa in Oct 1942 after the commencement of El Alamein, the only time that Rommel is ever seen to be wearing a standard issue tropical tunic. The piece which Rommel wore on his return is a dark olive example. The olive tunics do tend to hold their colour very well and do not fade to the extent that the green and especially tan tunics do.
This tunic is definitely a standard issue tan tunic, which Rommel was never seen to wear.
After what I've learnt over the years, I now have my doubts that this was Rommels tunic.

Insignia close up. This is definitely a faded standard issue tan tunic, which Rommel was never known to have worn. His private purchase tunics were known to have faded to tan, but they were a different cut and quality.

P.S. These photos were taken by a forum member at the Museum and are available in the uniforms thread.

One last pic. An extremely faded olive green tunic sitting beside a very faded tan tunic. The olive green tunic is the most faded example of these I have ever seen. As you can see there is no comparison between the different shades. Even if extremely faded, the tunic worn by Rommel at El Alamein could not be mistaken for the tunic sitting in the Munster Panzer museum.

        Have a nice day

          Hi Mark

Agree 100% this tunic was never worn by Rommel in Afrika, nor was this cap.
The Cap may be his but not the two he wore in the DAK. see this thread...

And nice examples of both the early (small upper pockets) and later (large upper pockets) first patterns.

          cheers

Great faded tunics Mark! Very cool to see where the EK ribbon once was. I hope one day to have a nice faded 1st pattern tunic.

Does anyone know where that museum aquired the Rommel tunic and hat? I find it hard to believe that a notable museum such as that would make a claim like that unless they got the stuff from a reliable source, such as someone in the family or something.

                      Hi Bruce,
I personally don't know the answer to your question about the provinance, but it could easily have been accepted by gullable, and non too knowledgable, museum directors in the distant past. (There were a few about, and where was the accessable information for active research?)
                      Regards,
                      Mark

                        Hi Bruce

Many Museums have items that are not what they claim to be....If i remember some of the items did come from the Rommel Family, but other items including the boots were identified as not belonging to Rommel, from his son.
Again the cap could be one of his but not one of the two he wore in Afrika. The tunic is doubtful too.
Museums while wonderful still must make their money....

                        regards
                        Tim

Don't let that one little thing stop you from visiting the Munster Panzer Museum. Apparently it is one of the better museums and certainly worth the trip. I'd like to go there myself one day.

                          Take care

Ok guys here is a little update. I have to thank Fred Green for hooking me up with this sweet little lot of goodies when i met up with him in Wisconsin after i ran a 1/2 marathon when i was on leave. Fred is a class act and I enjoyed meeting him at his home, dinning on pizza and having a few quality german beers with the man. Look forward to doing it again! But with out further beating around the bush, enjoy! I certainly did Matt

If anyone wants or needs other pics let me know. The pith helmet luft bird did not come from fred though, nor did the document in the pics. Matt
