rare photo and the only photo I have seen of the a metal SV287 badge in wear. One was sold with a patch a couple of years ago here on the WAF and I missed out on it :/ Matt

Thanks Matt & Bryant , the photo was truely a very nice bonus to a great photo Album I still cant stop looking through.

After communicating with a well known Historian & book Author of the AfrikaKorps last night he confirmed how rare this photo is. And till now this is the only photo that has come to the surface showing the metal badge in ware that he has seen. His thoughts were that if a badge was going to come to light shown in a pic it would make scence that it would be in a Portrait photograph such as this.

What I find interesting is that the photo shows the soldier to have many loops for awards but appears to have only placed this badge with a GAB and the two presentation medals. I think not long after the badge was made in the Bazzar by an Arab.

Incredible badge, that SV287 badge is now probably sitting in a relatives or veterans cupboard somewhere, hopefully it will see the light of day in the not to distance future

I'm sure this wasn't the only one made, any ideas to how many may be in existence?

Funny you should mention that Mark as I am indeed following up on it. Although I think it will be a long shot as this guy is just a friend of Rolfs . But hey we can but hope.

There is a badge in Dals McGuirks Book Rommels Army in Afrika which was brought back by a Kiwi vet in 1942 from Mersa Matruh which was found in a mapcase. I have read here that Gary armitage has one that was broached .

If anyone has one or knows of any others please post them.

Here is a link to a tropical edelweiss, once thought to be fake by many. Some have argued these are good for many years... looks like they were right afterall.

In reference to that particular tropical edelweiss I have always liked the appearance of it and why would they not produce a tropical version when they produce all other forms of tropical insignia including breast & cap eagles , Litzen & chevrons along with blitz's & trade specialty badges as well as the SV 288 badge in cloth....makes scence they would do a run of Edelweiss.

I think finding a period colour pic could be a little more difficult . Getting an untouched tropical tunic direct from a vet or family with one still on now that would be something.

There is a vet bring back tunic with one attached here is the States, it came from Italy. Years ago it was trashed by many as fake, just because no-one had ever seen one before.... sound familiar ?

This one arrived on the weekend, an untouched early example by a very scarce early maker, Emil Schebeler. Not too many have seen this maker before, but it is an unquestionable one looker.

Mark G,, what can a say, it has been a great week for seeing rare Dak items turn up,, that sure is one rare Pz cap and using the word "scarce" to describe the early maker of Emil Schebeler has to be an understatement; we will most likely never see another one of his with Pz soutache. CONGRATULATIONS
