Excellent comparison photos for us, thanks Tom.

I completely agree with Jan with the distinction. These are "original" post war breadbags used by the West German army just a few years after the war.

There are "fake" or reproduction breadbags being made today which are low quality, but are very close in construction to the original breadbags.

The inside shot with the divider. I don'y know if this will help, but I tend to agree with the points brought up. Concerning the bag in question, the presence of a divider, and the width of the leather strips on the front of the bag say post war to me as well. Greg

                  Unfortuantely I am cameraless again.

The one I have here has a hand stitched seam on the bottom, stitched to the centre flap. It's clearly visible(thick grey thread),but not visible in the photos I posted unfortunately.
Maybe it is there in the other bags, but the angle that the photos are taking looks like that the stitching isn't on those bags. - surely it should be common feature to them all?
Apart from that,I'm 99.9% and I tell my mate the outcome, and see if he will part with it as a "post-war" bag, thats had a fake stamp put on it.......or at best a refurbished post-war original?(make him feel better maybe)....but I have visions of him burning it before my eyes for taking up space in his attic for 24 years.........

Anyway, thankyou all for your help and photos.

The one on the right is the fake... Ooooops... sorry, POST-WAR I mean

As you can see it has a devider, the one on the left is a genuine WWII issue

Yes I see the devider thanks, but does the devider go all the way to the bottom, and is it stitched to the bottom?
I had a east German breadbag with a centre devider, but the divider was just a seperator, only ran about half way down the inside of bag, not a completely seperate pocket, as it is on the one I posted.

                        I've used the scanner.

The post-war ones I've seen the stitching isn't visible.
Still trying to figure out if it's not fake, why stamp it 1943?

I have resurrected this thread because I have a new question / observation that I would like to hear opinions on. I am in general agreement that a divider sewn inside the breadbag is a good sign that it is post war. However, tonight I saw a 1915 dated breadbag that has a divider in the interior. I also have in my collection a grey breadbag that I assumed was post war but now I have questions. My grey bag is stamped DRK and 1940 in the same colour ink, it has an interior divider, 3 hole aluminum buttons, the proper shape and other details that you normally see on war dated breadbags. I can see someone adding a war dated stamp to a post war bag to try to increase the value, but why add a DRK stamp, which would only hurt the value in my opinion because few people collect DRK. If they produced breadbags with dividers during WW1, it seems perfectly reasonable to me that dividers could be encountered in WW2 dated bags. I am not trying to prove or disprove anything... I'm simply looking for opinions on these points which I thought was interesting.

                          Cheers,

                          Steve

http://www.militaria.litzmannstadt.o...es/sale/17.htm - this is a political bradbag.. also has a divider inside.

anyway... from army and LW (and also police) bradbags I, personally, will always expect to see "no divider" construction..

I've currently been buying repro and east german breadbags for my own inspection.

I got a quality repro, that has all the hooks etc, AND a devider inside!
Why make "quality" reproductions, and then put a devider in, if original breadbags didn't have deviders?
I'll post them up in a few days when I have more time to let you all have a look.
So far I still have not seen a single bag devider stitched the same way as the one I posted up initially........
