5L nirosta water canister - LW bomber crew?

I've got one of those. I thought it was Luftwaffe, but the fact is it's made of steel not aluminium...Only marks or stamps are some letters on the back steel handle: 'D' on one side and 'D', 'F' and a 'T' on the other side, not as a makers code but in different positions, mess up. Painted some kind of 'feldgrau' with large white crosses on the sides and ' Trinkwasser 5l' on the back.

I am absolutely convinced that it is german WW2.... (I must have pictures somewhere)
Never heared the bomber story.... IMHO just a 5 l Trinkwasser container

Like i said.. I must have pictures of this container in use... I don't remember where... was it a Signal or an Adler... anyway, as soon as I find it I'll post it

C'mon Patrick !!! you know as well as I that this is a very famous picture of the Swiss guards in Vatican city (on a sunny day of course)

Now on a serious note.... Mathieu has also one in his museum in Baugnez, and I'm pretty sure he wouldn't put something post war in there......
(and yes, I am aware of the fact that there are wrong items in a lot of musea around the world)
