A faker makes simple mistakes like adding the black band.
The black HB weave fabric found on the Mint Lorenzo helmet cover makes no sense at all as its a company level repair only carried out on used and damaged covers that had the fronts ripped through combat usage.
This repair comes in many different fabrics but the use of modern binding gives it away clearly. But Fakers follow examples like the BE Jerome cover shown in the book looking to fool.
The sewing style clearly follows the other PVL cover shown above.
    Its uncanny.

Yet another logical reason why I am even more suspect of the things.

Here is a typical Lorenzo fake helmet cover.
I have handled a oakleaf B cover and Zelt..
the Zelt is much thicker and feels a different material..

are the fake covers made from cut up zelts or has someone found real camo cover material?

as if made from zelts should be easy to tell as its thicker.

All this stuff is made from Zelt fabric which is incorrect for these items.

Beaver in his book "Camouflage Uniforms of the Waffen-SS" said this strip is a "manufacturer's variation" shown in period pictures on the pages 122 and 126

On the page 119 Beaver said: "Material used in construction was the double-sided camouflage zeltabhn fabric"

Several smocks, caps and helmet covers has been made after 45 with pre 45 cloth. A question of how much you can earn per sqaure foot for the fakers...

Its been going on for, as kammo man said, quite literally decades- over half a century. Hardly much new. Additionally, many will use damages zelts, rather than new ones. But, when you think about it, zelts can be gotten for 1k (if damaged and a decent print). Make 2 or 3 covers, sell em as real, and it's pretty profitable for the faker- even if it is complete fraud.

Zelt is much thicker and different.. I am no expert though..

I do wonder if proper helmet cover material was ever found and made into covers.

Shocking Original items being destroyed to make fakes, eventually this will also push up the prices of SS zelts
