Wait a minute - I thought that was the "rule of thumb" for an engagement ring - do you work for Da Beer's . . . ?

Great conversation, guys. I almost NEVER use the word "investment" with collectors. I do believe, however, that long term, antiques are a good store of value, slightly outpacing inflation. The longer you hold, the better you will do. So buy what you love, can expect to keep for 20 to 30 years, and enjoy the material!

Not if it is over inflated with spurious pieces! Ron

For once, Ron and I agree ... buy only authentic pieces from dealers or collectors that guarantee authentic every artifact sold, who have a proven record of success, and are accepted by a majority of knowledgeable persons. If there are any concerns on a particular piece that you feel are substantial or credible, make sure that if you buy it, the price considers said concerns.

Yet there seems to be one rule for the dealer and another for the collector when it comes to price i have heard the same spin !snake oil line from more then one dealer on here .

o the market is soft or i need such and such to see it even though i have the same item on my site as you are showing me at such a price

yet the collictor is called greedy not a true collictor and the dealer is called business smart

Take some of your ss tunics as an example when it comes to price and original . Every one is entitled to price how they like but for you to say what you are saying and on the other hand price to the heavens . lets say the lah tunic at 22k coming from a rest home it must come with the vet info ? Bottom line what you are preaching here dont reflict your practice

But what if prices reverted back to levels that correspond to what it felt like when you bought that GBP ring in the 1960's - at today's standards, of course??

What was the average wage in England, during the 1960's? Compare that wage to the £30 you paid for your GBP ring . . . and I bet you'll be surprised to discover, it cost you about 15 hours of your time - that is, at the average wage being paid in 1960's England.

Now . . . how many guy's do you think would be thrilled . . . to give up 15 hours of time . . . at an average wage in today's standards - just to have a similar opportunity at an HR ring?

It boggles the mind - just thinking about it!!!
Agreed, and that is my point.
My take home pay after deduction of income tax was around £30.00 GBP per week (say $2500 USD per annum), not a bad UK income in 1968, so the HR represented a week's work for me back then but was certainly a good long term investment as well as my having the great pleasure of ownership .
We cannot go back, those conditions no longer exist, we are where we are. The gap between retail prices and average incomes has widened as hobby demand has grown and a very sophisticated global market has evolved to service that demand.
When, after 32 years of ownership, I sold my ring in 2000 for $2500 USD that sum taken as a weekly pay-packet was relative to a $130K per year salary. Current average annual take home pay in the UK is around £25000 GBP, say $37500 USD, so to get back to 1960's relative income-v-price values look for HRs' priced at say, $750 USD retail. The TR collectables market has fallen back, as it has in the past, but it will not fall that far.
Forgive an old man for rambling on, a fault of old age.

i have always bought and collected for the pure enjoyment,as for the statement of prices reverting to the 60's,that is present times.in other words same income as present, just lower prices.as far as dealer this and dealer that,i have always believed each of us as individuals is responsible for our purchases.you need to do your research and be satisfied as to what you are buying is authentic or not...............dave

I need the 10 year investment timeline. I may not be around - or care about militaria - in 20 or 30 years.

That's tough call with everything blocked out. It's almost like he's trying to hide somethings. I like the leaf patterns...what I can see of them....and I like the inside of the ring, but there's just not enough showing to really see the "flaws" that could tell us a lot more. The price is right, if the ring is.
