One of the true experts here and a great website...although I have to say about that email is that what I have seen over the years is that some who were looked at as experts before the internet sometimes lost it here on forums...some when questioned threw tantrums and left to other forums because not everyone agreed. I think its more like what Jacques pointed out...people know about what they handle a lot of,there is a basic knowledge aquired through experience...there is also a stymie point when some new never before seen item enters the scene be it real or not...where really a lot more research is needed to prove anything i.e. the Luftwaffe Wraps and the perfect insignia put togethers sold as Estate buys..it makes the collecting world ugly sometimes but it at least acknowledges that we are in a hobby that caters to temptation of fraud.

I agree Mike is highly respected, and Jacques your point is well spoken as usual. John is quite correct, each genre/sub genre has its collectors whose had the opportunity to handle a lot of a single item, hence research and networking on a forum and email and at shows must substitute for hands on knowledge, so learning who to listen to is part if the collecting curve. Good thread gentlemen! I really enjoy the various perspectives which are all based on sound rationale, especially from the long time collectors.

I feel that the major problem the forum has is that despite being blatantly caught outright faking, found to be altering originals and selling known fakes there are members and 'big name' dealers who are seemingly free to operate on here with total impunity.

That is the vested commercial interest. Money should not get in the way of ethics for a collector driven forum.

You need to have the professional dealers here have 'Dealer' below their usernames its one of the reasons most of my friends won't join. They see it as mostly a dealer trade promotional site, right or wrong.

                Opinions

I for one don't know were I would be had it not been for my fellow collectors sharing their knowledge. Its what makes this sight so great. I guess I do know were I would be, with a collection full of crap. My first experience here was when ErichS told me a 1929 reichsparteitag (non-portable) was garbage AND WHY! He saved me several hundred dollars, because he was happy to share his passion for early reichsparteitag. Let us all not forget why we got into this collecting thing, for some of us it's not a business (which is fine) It's the passion for that piece of history that we can hold, display, and protect for the future generations. Ok you get the point, now wipe away that tear in your eye and get back to searching for treasures!!!

                    Yea yea
That's all been said a million times before. Are you a dealer?
For all I know your both dealers and what's your name even your first name for crying out loud?

                    See what I mean?

Mine is Eric Horsfield a private collector of 45yrs with what I like to call a revovling door collection as I grow tired of items I flip to get something new and keep the interest fresh and exciting.
Its very difficult in this economy and I've no idea how much longer I can afford it.

Recently a fellow member here stopped me from making a 2k mistake (also a private collector) I sent him a pm not blast it all over the forum incognito mode. Its enough and I am forever indebted.
Read post #78 by Ian pretty much sums up my mates feelings that's why they check in and read about gear but don't join.
TR has big problems that need to be sorted out, no better place than forums like this.

                    Regards
                    Eric

Thanks for your kind words Electric and I was glad to be able to help a fellow collector.

Eric, I am NOT a dealer but a private collector who has been in the hobby since 1968.

Eric Horsfield....... I am just a private collector with a limited budget for collecting. I just happen to love this stuff. My name is Tim! whats all the hostility about??? I was merely pointing out how invaluable this sight can be when the more knowledgeable people are helping out the novices, and then I made an example. So I'm not sure why your all upset. sorry if I destroyed your day by posting my opinion, but then again you have "heard it all before" I'm sorry that I enjoy this sight and other peoples treasures (and opinions). I think your idea of a dealer tag may be a good idea, when I posted what I posted, i was merely talking about what a great sight this is. I really wasn't even trying to have an opinion either way about dealers. I obviously don't want dealers disrupting the integrity of this sight. I guess I'll just stay in the background and let you do all the talking. I hope you have a great week.

Oh and because you think I'm a CIA dealer plant........... My name is Tim. I'm an electrician and I live outside of Boston. Would you like anymore info?

That's wonderful and highly refreshing Erich, my comment wasn't meant to be disrespectful to you Sir just some flaws that permeate this and other forums.

                          Happy collecting
