Tunic
Hello
I was just following this thread about the tunic which I know is also being dicussed on another forum.
First of all you are right that the German element of the unit (that is those who did not escape and return home) were interned in Italy. Here the Bristish who gauarded them, helped themselves to most things fo value, weapons, equipment, jewellry (such as watches and rings), paperwork etc. I know from many veterans that they had their belongings 'stolen' in this way. what the prisoners often did was give up one item in order to save another - sp for example if they handed in one hand gun, the managed to keep another. what was left they sometimes traded with the gaurds for food. I also know for a fact that when the Ukrainian element of theis division was brought back to England after a couple of years in Italy, many of them still had their original issue German service tunics. Those who kept the best items including medals and cammo gear were generaly those who had gone into hiding and not held in the internment camps. Paperwork was often most easily hidden in the bottom of boots and shoes etc.
As for who this may have belonged to, I can be sure that it was not KOPP. I have several pictures of him and he was not an "old fighter" entitled to wear the cheveron.
The Division did have several doctors of this rank. I will check my papers and see who if any were "old fighers" and then see if I can find pics of them wearing the chevron
best wishes

Hello
the following German Drs were serving with the Galician division with the rank of SS Stubaf. in May 1945
Dr Thomas Andresen, 19.7.06, SS No: 137 169
Dr Herbert Booß, 21. 8.08, SS No: 139 223
Dr Georg Coldeway, 11. 7.10, SS No: 337 728
Dr Helmut Pickardt, 19. 3.06, SS No: 251 099
Dr Helmut Schmitt, 6. 3.10, SS No: 28 967
Dr Gerhard Stridde, 26.12.93, SS No: 187 591
As Schmitt had the lowest SS no he would seem the most likely candidate
best wishes
