There are lots of other threads on these, in a lot of detail.

If you search on 'Totenkopf' you should find most of them.

      Happy hunting!

IMO that's a Panzer Skull for the collar tab, not an SS skull (but what do I know) - you might get better responses in the Panzer or Uniforms/Insignia forum on authenticity...

                Skull

I disagree. It looks like an original early SS cap totenkopf. The SA and others also wore this type badge. It has good detail and also, the original tin or nickel plating on the back has the same appearance of other originals I've seen. Looks great to me !! e-mail if you want pics of mine: hobie.pirough@aacn.org

It's the 'first pattern' SS skull, modelled after that used by the Imperial Hussars of the 19th Century . Original or not .... you'll have to ask Robin Lumsden or the other experts in these.

                  Ian.

                    Ian's description is right.
                    It looks OK to me.

                          Dave.

These shouldn't have RZM M/1 marks.

                          Sorry.

                              Skull

There are several troubling aspects of this insignia. I'm not positive exactly when the "M1" (insignia) designation came into effect. However, every original badge of this type I've seen is either unmarked, or has the earlier RZM designation with the RZM in a circle and a maker mark. Those with a maker mark I've seen have always said "St.&L." This system of having the RZM logo and a maker mark is occasionally seen and I believe it to be the system used when the RZM was first established. Later, of course, it was replaced by the "M1" designation for insignia. I feel it would be very unlikely for this badge to have this later marking. The badge also appears to be artificially oxidized. What are the shiny areas on the back? That looks very odd. Also the prongs are of uneven width. This is also abnormal. Go to the post by Alex92 under "SS Skull" a few posts previous. Look at the prongs and compare to yours. Also notice that the original tin/nickel plating is stuill intact on the bacl. Hints of the plating are on the front too. If you want to see a maker marked one, e-mail me at: hobie.pirough@aacn.org I do not fell the one you posted is authentic.

I was wondering if someone could if these look time period or not. This is the only picture I have.
