Hallo and thank you for the front side picture! I know these skulls and I own some similar variants of this skull. But I thought my "octopus" skull with such a nose is a fake, because it has an unusual nose part, too (red marked part). Now I saw your skull with the same nose. Are you sure, that skulls with this nose are ok?

It seems to me that both the first skull you posted and the "octopus" style have not been heavily faked. And there appear to be quite a few variations of these early skulls. There's yet another variation currently on the Collector's Guild website. The brass colored one I posted is the only one like that I've ever seen. These were far from standardized, and I've seen early SA and Freikorps wearing these cap badges as well. Unlike later skulls, it's hard to compare them to known originals. The "octopus" one I posted has an interesting plating, as I mentioned, noticable on the reverse. It almost resembles chrome, in that it's very shiny, but is a warmer color. I think it's a tin composition. It was probably considered cheap back then, but is high quality by today's standards. The ST.&L. marked ones have this. Even heavily oxidized examples that are plated in this fashion usually have at least some remnants of this plating remaining. I also believe some of these early skulls have a metal wash that more resembles an aluminum color. Here's the reverse of an ST.&L. marked one.

Here is the octupus skull, which I talked about in posting #350. The pins are missing. I'm still not sure, is it a good skull?

Yes, There were bags of them availble at the Kassel show in Germany this past November, 30 Euros each! I bought none (zero)!!
