Looks like a '60s copy to me. Very thin silver plating over the brass. And the one in the Hayes book isn't much better.

                jawless skulls

I'll now submit my jawless skulls for review. All bought in the 1980's. I had another but I was so embarassed about how obviously fake that it is that I cropped it out of the picture. I have a bad feeling about a couple more in the picture also. Thanks for all the help.

I don't like the one shown at top left, (Poorly formed, odd design and thin prongs) but other than that, I think the others are OK?

                    Cheers, Ade.

I agree with Ade.......but I'd venture that the one at top left could also be OK.

I have seen some poorly formed originals in the past - good 'quality' but not so good striking, if you get my drift.

A lot of them have a 'filled in' section at the bottom of the skull.

These were made in quantity from the mid-19th century until 1945 by many makers. Every time I think I've got the set, another one crops up.

The one at the bottom left is actually fairly scarce.

Actually, the one that bothers me is the upper right, with the broad grin. I have a bunch of these, two on period caps, but have not seen this peculiar version. Does anyone have a similar example, especially on a visor??

I like that funny looking skull on the top right. I think with early skulls you have to judge them based on materials used and the overall "look" and feel of the piece.

The newest fakes I have seen are made of zinc and look really convincing and make one wonder why would early skulls be made of zinc, although I believe some indeed were.

Many German cap etc. badges from 1915-1918 were in zinc or other grey metal.......including some TKs.
