Man I hate to break it to you but I think I see the shadow of a breast eagle on that tunic.

For what ever reason army tended to be more conservative in those areas. Just an observation.

I have to disagree, ever been looking at period photos? This style is the Austrian one and have nothing to do with SS. It may be that SS soldiers liked the smarter look, but that is it.

It is only a theory of mine, but I believe that the SS was trying to escape Prussian Military tradition when they opted for the long pointy collars and other non-Army tunic features. We have to remember that it was National Socialism and Hitler was a Socilaist. A class leveler. Promotion in the SS was not based less on your connections/family as was the old tradition in the German Army. I believe it was Hitler who got rid of the uppercase V in von which of course preceded many blue-blood names. So the thinking is that Hitlers private National Socialist Army wants to look a little different. So as an SS tunic collector these features we are discussing are things I like to see.

Whereever did you make up these assumptions?? The v in von have allways been written in small letters since like the 1500 century.

He wanted to look progressive (the new breed) and not be stuck in Prussian traditions. On the other side the Heer officer was probable just the opposite. He had a sense of military tradition and he himself felt superior to the SS officer. He was from a military background and proud of tradition. The army officer probably stuck much closer to regulations than the SS officer.

Ill give Glenn and Boni the benefit of the doubt here because in my experiences many of the SS officers tunics Ive seen and handled had the breast eagle ghosts either holes or shadows that only appeared under UV. I dont see it on this one and Ive seen tunics with moth tracks and other shadows that could cause over paranoia as well. You wont know until you look at it in person. But the circled area looks too small to be a Heer eagle outline to me.I do see a little u shaped area near the pocket in the center.
Now all that aside the tunic due to the altered cuff length may very well have been a re-issued heer tunic worth what someone is willing to pay.

Dr.S that is Arlo on the back of the Alice's Restaurant album.

Whats more hilarious is Ive seen tunics given high praise by "experts" on these forums and in person the switchover stands out clearly.
Id have to say its my opinion that if you neglect weighing in the whole item to see what you have and just discount it based on the boneheaded logic of a post war collector who has no real idea of what the SS did to get tunics then you sell yourself out. The shows and forums are full of guys that only collect things that someone else recomended to them thats fine but please dont try and convince everyone you know anything when all you know is you dont have one and youre afraid of them because your best pal the "real" expert told you to be.

There are more than a few photos of SS officers wearing Breast eagles seconded to Heer schools for training..there are enough photos of SS officers in Heer uniform prior to being assigned to the SS..do you think they threw away all thier old uniforms when they were assigned to the SS? In 44 and 45 many SS officers were replacements from the Heer.I use my head when I look at these tunics I dont just base my conclusions on a picture on a website and the comments from "experts" who gained that status because they own a few tunics and now can say for certain because of those few tunics how they ALL should look. I wait until I see the item itself.

I appreciate Glenns approach and agree with him. Ive known of the tunic since it surfaced it was offered twice to me at a discount since and I didnt buy it.Simply because of such stigma associated with tunics converted and or retailored. But I always reserve final judgement for when I see it in hand.

It seems these forums are more about establishing a heirarchy..pointing out others mistakes with glut and glee and more to embarass than anything else and not owning up to the mistakes made by the untouchables.

At least I got one thought out of 10 right. I said I liked it. For me I give it more than a 50/50. I was just bringing into play all the variables.
