I hate to bring up a dead horse again, but I had the opportunity to examine this tunic this morning. There is NO sign of a breast eagle - no color difference where one was, and absolutely no disturbance of the material from any threads to sew one on. Also, the cuffs were not altered (lengthened or shortened). The crease line above the cuff comes from the edge of the material on the inside fold - when this area is ironed/pressed, this line is formed.

BTW, I have this in my possession for a few days. If anyone has specific questions on it, maybe I can answer them...Tom

                      Whatever

Well whatever, but does it actually fit you? No seriously, it all sounds good. I think we would all love some close-ups of the collar tabs and sleeve eagle.

The cuff observation makes sense give that the cuff/sleeve lining was in exactly the right place as one would expect to see and an un-altered sleeve tunic. There is really no way (short of re-building the sleeves inside and and out) to make any real change to the sleeve or turn-back cuff length/depth without it being very obvious.

One thing is for sure and that is this: that tunic has received more fishbowl attention than many if not most accepted W-SS tunics and has held up pretty well to the doubts expressed. I have no reason to think anything other than the tunic is in fact what it is represented as being.

In the mirror, same as always John! And Mr. Wizard is here to pull you out of a situation, once again, in which you find yourself hopelessly in over your head!

Wether or not the traces of that eagle remain at this late date is irrelevant, and not at all surprising, but they CLEARLY were there at the time of the photo. There are legions of 'SS' tunics out there, upon which no remnants of the Heer breast eagles remain. Geez, am I the only one who realizes this?!?!?! I'm starting to wonder.

And to me, any possible SS connection to this tunic has never been in the breast eagle or boards anyway. Or in the cuff depths or number of collar hooks either. I agree with the Doc that the real clues are in the sewing of the sleeve eagle and tabs. Neither of which I really care for from the pics.
Let me ask a legitimate question. How many honest-to-God-for-sure-for-sure tunics have the sleeve eagle sewn on like that with the backing cloth not completely folded over? I've never liked that, as it looks much too sloppy. And 'sloppy' has no place on an SS officer's tunic. Looks more like a 'signature' to me.

Sorry I have to disagree eagles can be found on original tunics and in original period photos sewn on in all manner of ways from neatly hand stitched folded over, just trimed and sewn on flat, straight stitched, roughly hand stitched, machine sewn and zig zag machine sewn...they were'nt as particular as some collectors would have liked them to be.
Collar tabs could be hand sewn or machine sewn despite what collectors "like to see" it didnt matter to the officer as long as the purpose was served.

If tgn says there was no eagle and that the cuff wear was from the area it connected to the sleeve then there is no need to pretend to know whats wrong with it,when nothing is.One way to know for certain is to hold a UV light about 18 inches from the breast area in a pitch black room, and move the light around at angles if an eagle was ever there it will show up for sure.Ive used this method for years and it has never failed.

It amazes me that you say a shadow that was there for 60+ years suddenly vanished in the past 7 years.Attempts to artificially fade it off would have resulted in damage to the cloth that would be easy to see.
