To date, the only ones I have ever been comfortable with are the WWI examples. They are not considered by most to be worth more than the unengraved variety (I disagree, but that is a matter for another discussion), and where there is no extra money perceived to be made, I am always more comfortable with engravings.

It's odd to me so many folks who collect EKs are quick to snub their nose at an engraved cross however, rave over a "named/attributed" knight's cross which has in reality no real proof of who it belonged to. Blade collectors at the first site of an SS dagger with stamped numbers or a "fine" engraved name/monogram are giving each other high fives and chest pumps.
As an EK collector myself I can certainly understand why there's a certain amount of scepticism when it comes to engraved crosses due to the amount of fakes. I can't help but wonder how many real engraved crosses are passed up. The below link is one example of a cross I think had some merit.

Pictures of this cross are gone so I cannot judge it, I can tell you that these engraved SS Iron Crosses are being pumped out of Latvia at a record rate.Comment

Any pics of these Latvia fakes? The engraving I saw on the Grenadier site EK was consistent with period hand engraving on other awards and not even close to what I've seen lately.Comment
