    tail piece

(Darrell seems to think so) , The piece came from Jims collection and it came from the people who took it from the plane, i met them in person. It was hacked from the plane and there is quite a bow in it which you cannot see in the picture. The sides are crimped in, and are very sharp. Thanks Harry For the extra info, On a down note Some comments would put you off posting i dont mind being criticised ,you expect this on forums, but this is a 1000% correct Piece and story. Dont forget Ireland is a very small place, Paul.

That's a great piece of Luftwaffe history.

Funny how people can draw different conclusions from looking at photos.
For me, they clearly show that your section with the swastika was hacked/pulled off which in turn bent and twisted the opposite side of the tail. The aircraft was then set on fire.

        Tail piece from Ireland

Thanks Ben for the comment your spot on. I was thinking it was me and the way i showed the Photo. I think they tryed to hack the whole tail off. Its a real shame They could not save the aircraft. It would be nice to see it on display, but all the aircraft allied and german were cut up for scrap, or flew back to the uk. Regards Paul.

            Hi,
Just to confirm what Paul has said, the piece was in my collection. It came directly from the people who took it from the plane. You can look at the photos and think what you like, but that is the plane it came from.
            Jim.

I can see that it is very possible that this piece came from the plane in the photo. It was probably hacked off crudely, before the plane was set a fire, and trimmed up later.

              I like it

Well done Paul , super item . Myself and Paddy Cummins will be covering this crash in great detail in our upcoming book on the Luftwaffe crashes in Ireland from 1940 to 1945 . This crash is about 40 miles from my house , I visited the crash site about 15 years ago and there were still parts there. I have photos of all the crew from this crash plus other material . Maybe one day this section will finds it's way back to the Kingdom

My mother is from Kenmare, Co.Kerry. Just outside the town a Luftwaffe pilot came down in the estuary or what is known as Kenmare River. The pilot was buried in the local grave yard. Recently enough tho the Luft pilot was exhumed and brought to the German war cemetery which is in Glencree, Co Wicklow. So a few Luftwaffe planes came down in the Kingdom.

As for the tail piece below I like to think that some Paddy really did take it from the plane in the photograph........ while the plane was on fire.

                    Great piece Paul.

Here are some details that may interest you " The Dragon" . The plane that is thought to have crashed into Kenmare Bay was a HE111P "1G+LS" of 8./KG27 . It crashed after being hit by gun fire from the trawlers Grackle and Dandara . The crew were as follows , Fw.Arnold Putz - Pilot , Oblt.Konrad Hafele - Observer , Fw. Werner Seegner - Radio Operator and Fw.Friedrich Schulz- Flight Mechanic .
Only the body of Fw. Friedrich Schulz was recovered when it was spotted floating in Kenmare Bay by two local fishermen . Fw. Schulz was given a full military burial and buried in Holy Cross Cemetery , Kenmare .
Between 1956 and 1960 all the German service men that were buried in various cemeteries around Ireland were dug up and buried in the German Military Graveyard in Glencree , Co. Wicklow .

Thank you Schnellmeyer. This Fw. Friedrich Schulz was buried near my grandparents grave aswell as the rest of the clan which is why I was interested. Plus one of the local fisherman that took the body from the river was an in-law of mine.

What was the story behind the two trawlers Grackle and Dandara? They were Irish trawlers that opened up on the HE 111 as it flew by I take it.

I can get the name of one of the local fisherman if it any help to you. I think a cousin of mine also has a photograph of the boat while taking Friedrich out of the water.

                            Thanks again.

You are most welcome , glad you liked the details that I added . I have the names of the fishermen that were involved in this incident , I even interviewed the brother of one of them .
The fishing trawlers were British and working out of Milford Haven, Wales . There were a total of five trawlers in the fleet and all were armed with .303 Lewis guns , the HE111 took heavy fire from the Grackle and Dandara and headed towards the southwest coast of Ireland .It is possible that the HE111 never made it to the coast and crashed out to sea . Fw. Schulz died from exposure and not injuries from combat or the crash landing .
I would be very grateful if you could help me with any other details about this crash , photos would be super.
I have some photos of Oblt. Konrad Hafele which I got from his daughter some years ago , please keep in touch , Up The Kingdom

                                Hi Schnellmeyer,

I told the story to my Mother ans she is going to ring a son of one of those two fishermen tonight to find out more. I believe the son has a photograph of the two fishermen in the trawler with the body of Fw. Friedrich Schulz.

We will see what comes of this anyway and I will let you know.

What was the name of the brother of the fisherman that you interviewed?

                                Thank you.

ps. Very sad to think the poor man died of exposure down in that part of the world.
