In case you missed it, EMA DE sold for $86,365.00 Last bid came
within 3 minutes of close at $75,100.00 extending the auction for a
few more minutes. Buyer preimum was 15% added to final bid, adding
some $11,265.00 in this case, making the grand total $86,365.00 to be
paid, but by who? In any case makes me glad I got my I.Jones version
for much much less, and likewise my real one many decades ago now.

the DE flag is quite rare so the fetched price shouldn't be any surprise

It only takes two people who want it or need it and can afford it. Seriously doubt there was a shill bidder in there, someone wanted that piece and so did another obviously.

            Such is life.

kudos to the people who could afford it. i think the pricing is realistic to those who see more value to it (try finding one for sale readily?!), hence shill bid is not needed. DE relics is another level of advance collecting, not many, including me could pay these prices

This item is an example that went for a price that frankly does not reflect a realistic value. We had two wealthy individuals who likely had DE tops and wanted to complete their standarte. One of these is now satisfied and the other is still in the hunt. The cloth is rare but can be found. The crossbar and tassles are much harder to find. At this price level, there are few who will want to play at that level. However, I am assured that future DE cloths for sale on dealer's sites will reflect this sale and will likely sit for a long time. I have a NSKK and a Motor SS cloth and have no expectations of realizing anywhere near the price attained by this nice, but far more common version of the DE flag.

We may all agree, but the dealers have taken note and will not be selling these for last year's prices. I suspect they will be priced higher and that one will just have to pay that price to obtain a DE from a dealer. I don't think camo paratroop helmets should be worth $15,000.00 to $20.000.00, either, but that is what they sell for now that everyone is used to seeing those crazy prices. SOMEONE is buying all the good ones.

In a couple years it will be a forum of just new guys collecting tinnies and postcards.

The rest will be gone with mostly only those investors wealthly enough to have their broker buy for them left, with neither time, knowledge, or acutal interest in the hobby. Not all with big money, but the majority.

Dealers love those with more money than brains. Paying twice what something is worth or twice what is was "last year" isn't anything other than that. The fact someone can afford it isn't the point.

The upper trend is obvious on the forum.

The flags section is party and war flags 99%

daggers are Army, SA, 2nd Luft and HJ (the bottom 4)

                      other areas are similar.

And for at least some it will be like the Waite blades collection. Overpaid and hard to dump when they kick, but dealers flocked to him for the stated reason.

But being able to just buy the chance to say "I have a big one" compensates for some I guess.

As far as the Internet, seeing and learning, trading, etc, they've made it boring by making it own of range to the norm compared to any past period.

                        Mark-
How true your words are. When the internet forums started years back, a plethera of wonderful, rare items were posted by both old timers and some new collectors. The newer collectors will never have the opportunity to experience the adreniline rush brought on when one met a new vet every couple of weeks and bought the things he brought back from the war. Many times, we would find things in those cigar boxes that no one knew what they were. Sometimes a treasure, many times junk. There wee many times I overpaid due to the fact that the owner was elderly and had fallen on hard times. Young men of moderate means had the opportunity to luck in to a rare item or two for their collection. Like many collectors, I would sell my duplicates to fund new aquisitions. I remember at one time having a mount with 42 2nd class KVK's for sale.
Today, if you are not a wealthy individual, most of the big names will not give you the time of day. Your prediction of the future to me is al too real.

1st....Dont call it sold Just because it went for that much....Deals have to be worked out and if the buyer does not have Funding then its a No sale.

2nd....Collectors are not dumb...Most wont just buy ANYTHING for Huge Money...It has to be the right piece.

3rd....The New collectors will Not be there in 15 more years so who will all these Investors be selling this stuff too....Most of the General Public wount be able to afford it.

These DE pieces have always been among the creme de la creme in the TR collecting world and the prices reflect that. There are still plenty of affordable TR collectibles out there and there will be for quite some time, but yes I agree it is can be a tough hobby on the wallet.

Since the 1970's I have heard people saying "This will never last. The prices just keep going up, and soon no one will be able to afford this stuff."

I heard that from a collector friend after a big show in the 70's. He had purchased an Allgemeine SS General's visor at the show. He owned it for about 2 hours, and then had buyer's remorse. He was afraid that he would never get his money back out of it if he went to sell it. So he turned it around and sold it at the same show.

The "ridiculous" price that he paid?

                              $2,000.
