.why would a soldier paint his weapon for cammo purposes when 3/4 of the year it would be more useful in brown. The bulge bulge does not make sense, its such a slight piece to see versus all the other things in the field.
Under that rationale, why winter camo a helmet or a gas mask canister or a belt buckle? And yet, we know for certain that they in fact did that to helmets, gas mask canisters and even belt buckles.

Eqipment is generally easier to repaint when needed......when a soldier painted his helmet did he remove the liner and paint inside the shell? No just a quick paint job.

Interesting, anyone have period photos to show personally I'd forget it if water based, in short order it'd all over everything imo the weapon wasn't used after being painted and the sling added.

            Regards
            Eric

The one shown by Gran is certainly more convincing

both of this k98k are realy interesting, the one from sasso looks better, but the first one is cool as well,i wonder how the soldiers have removed the paint of them in spring,it was easy to put green paint over white camo on helmet, have owned and seen some, but with a rifle it was not that easy from my point of viev.

Sassos picture shows what youd expect from a field painted piece, not slamming bills piece and i do thank him for showing it.

Modern soldiers paint their firearms all the time... if they do it today I can't see why a soldier during WW2 would be any different. All I'm saying is that it is totally plausible and possible.

Has anyone ever seen rifles in camo pattern other than white. Rain pattern, water pattern anything?

german equipment was usually painted with water based paint chalk mixed with water or lime, or white bandage.
For me first 98k ( if white paint is original) metal parts had been cleaned postwar, second one looks like painted postwar (fake camo).

Sorry to thread break - thank you for posting the MP40 pic.
What is the hooked attachment he has on the barrel nut?

Hi, its an mp38 early safty feature, quite basic, made out of leather and attaches to the barrel, and the strap attaches to the bolt handle to prevent movement, for the earlier style mp38 bolt handles, before the later style was introduced with added slide safety built into the handle and wedge made in the receiver

                                Got it - thanks,

The leather is bending against the fold in his jacket, after it has been pressed over the 38's cocking handle to secure it in the closed position - it's not a hook -

                                Thanks.
