Thanks, guys--I was hoping to get some more input as to actual photos of these hats in wear, but photographic evidence is very limited.


If the "squished cross" was authorized (& worn), I have yet to see any evidence.


Bottom line is that these are one of the rarest of the regular-production hats, and one of the easiest to swap out insignia on, so if one is ever offered to you, I would be sure to get many opinions before buying.

Here is the current-made Janke KM Chappy from Extra Klasse--note they use the squished cross with black thread for the cockade.
Given that Janke has been making these things since the 1970s, there has to be 1000s of these wreaths in circulation:

Actually, almost all KM wreaths have a shape that leaves a space which can nicely fit a squished cross--therein lies the rub.
