On the occasion of his death (1964), the German government decided to allocate a sum of money to his Ascari in Tanzania: a Temporary Cash Office was established in Mwanza, on Lake Victoria. Of the 350 elderly who showed up, only a handful of them could show the certificates issued to them by von Lettow in 1918. Others showed shreds of their old uniforms as evidence. The German banker responsible for the sum had an idea: at the presentation of each of the applicants, he saw himself delivering a broom. The veterans who still knew how to respond to the drill orders given in German were considered to be proven beneficiaries of the subsidy. None of them failed the test.
