I found this and it shows that this caps stamp is correct. The very early unit and cap go hand and hand. The unit did exist when this cap was used

Pre-war manufactured Bergmuetzen had no vent grommets.

I find it hard to believe that the unit stamp is an original wartime stamp. It is missing the abbreviation for Abteilung. I have never seen an original stamp that did not specify what type of unit (Rgt., Abt., Btn., etc.) the stamp is for. There were Panzerabwehr-Bataillonen in addition to Panzerabwehr-Abteilungen.

                            Yes...in August of 1938. I'd call that pre-war myself...

As far a the cap itself is concerned I kind of believe its tailored in the field or a local mom and pop tailor shop..OR a post war fabrication.. Leaning towards the first circa 1943 or 44 made from used material..It would be helpful if someone could find out if the stamped unit was attached thru the whole war or when or if it seperated ...JMHO Billbert

Comments were never taken to be a slam at me personally. No offense ever taken. One sees these caps with no vents, one vent, two... I think I once saw a period pic of one with three vents per side. My opinion is that the "norm" is for the cap to have one vent on each side. Other variations are certainly possible...
