This web link states this unit was at least around until late 1944. It was part of the 1st Gebirgs Division. With this in mind and the edelweiss is a later war pattern. What pattern T Eagle would I need to put back it to restore it. I found a thread with the different
era eagles in it but I cannot find it now. Any help will be most welcome!
    Thanks in advance David R.
http://www.axishistory.com/index.php?id=1044 This link has some more info on this unit and it list the pz.abw 44 as one of it's units.

Here is a stamp in a heavy overcoat.
        it´s the same company.
And look what´s written in the Lexikon of the Wehrmacht:
        http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/...Abteilung%2044
        That´s the AntiTank-Unit from the 1. Gebirgsdivivsion.

Give a man an opinion and you feed him for a day,
teach a man to use the "search" function on the WAF and you feed him for a lifetime.

but this eagle would historically not be correct, if it is a cap from 1938 you need a eagle on green backing not on field grey like the shown one...
the fieldgrey were produced not before 1940

the pz. abw. 44 was renamend in 1940 to pz.jg 44 (like all the pz.abw. units in the mountain divisions)
it is mentioned in the link above too...

if everything is correct on the cap (i think so) it is not possible, that the cap is made after 40

although the buttons could have been changed, i think even the buttons and the edelweiss have been applied postwar...
the edelweiss does not fit in condition to this cap

marking over such a long time with the wrong unit? i don't think so
and in the later years of the war nobody cared anymore about little differences in clothing, though it wouldn't be stamped by the unit.
even the 1. mountain division was in the field 43 and 44 so it couldn't even be a stamp from a training unit at home, were this little differences bothered somebody

for me all details of cap and history lead to a pre war cap

but i think this would be an endless discussion

it is a nice cap congrats...

And so it goes..we all offer what we think is true from collector experience..see people can agree to disagree without a pissing match or name calling.. and apparently the new owner is pleased a knows a little more about his cap..Billbert
The collector must be the happy one UNTIL its time to resell...
