Show Us Your S A Headgear

Since we have covered the N S K K, I thought we might get more participation with S A headgear. So lets see those kepis, schiffen, visor caps and helmets.
To kick off this thread, I thought we should start from the begining. In the early 20's, thw S A and the Stosstruppe wore a variety of soft visored caps that have since been nicknamed "Hitlermutze." They came with and without chin straps, some were without any insignia while others were fitted with the tricolor cocard. After the institution of the 1927 pattern national emblem, the at could be found on the caps. Here is an example of the type of cap referred to as a "Hitlermutze."

As the S A progressed as an organization, it began to wer distinctive color collar tabs with their uniforms. The following "Hitlermutze" is circa 1930-31. At the time, certain Gausturme authorized officers to wear a color top to match the collar tab. The white top could have come from any of the following Gausturme-Brandenburg, Danzig, Hamburg, Ostmark or Ostpreussen.

first model kepi manufactured of doeskin wool and a soft leather visor. This kepi was evidently made in 1932 to be worn with the four pocket service tunic introduced at that time. By Spring of 1933, the colored tops were authorized for wear by other ranks

I don’t have much in the way of SA so here is my one and only. It is a 1937 pattern Kepi with early insignia from group Neiderhien.

Thanks to Mr. Coleman this thread is off to a great start, and should prove as interesting and educational as the one on N S K K headgear. You have an outstanding headgear collection Mr. Coleman!

Currently there are some beautiful SA kepis for sale on www.ulric-of-england.com and many are from the Len Champion collection. I particularly like the SA Feldjagerkorps kepi.

Fobke's hat with the Stosstrupp Hitler traditional tunic of Robert Wagner, who was Fobke's best friend. These were both brought back together.

Member Bill Dienna has a tremendous amount of information on Hermann Fobke.

                            Bob,
Thank you very much for posting the pictures of the Stosstrupp cap. These are fascinating caps. Although they look really early this is in fact a commemorative hat that was worn in the mid 1930's by original members of the Stosstrupp (similar to the special uniform introduced for holders of the Blood Order). I have only ever seen them being worn at the November Munich gathering when other groups also wore their traditional uniform.
