it looks like a cast copy to me.

Hello Pete, yes.......... visually via the image the Badge appears that way and under normal circumstances you would be correct.
However the Badge is not a cast copy (although it appears to have the characteristics) the Badge is a period die stamp hollow version that has from the Reverse been filled (more than likely Post War) with hot metal hence the Badge has been exposed to extreme heat. In other words it is not cast it is a die stamped hollow back that has been filled (long after manufacture) with instense heat affecting the Obverse ........ A crazy thing to do with a Badge I grant you that.
I will locate the Badge in the next few days and take a picture of the reverse to endorse what I state
