Thanks Sergeant 08, it is unusual to see the young man still wearing an Imperial belt and buckle.

David, you say the belt buckle in the musiker photo is "non approved."
Who made these buckles and why were they worn?
Was the uniform code strictly enforced?

Last question: Did the Kyffhäuserbund qualify as a political organization or merely as a veterans organization?

    Cheers
    Larry

      I would say both.

No doubt, the orign were veterans with old traditions etc. but during the years they discovered a new powerful enemy: The Social Democrats!

„Für Gott, König und Vaterland - Gegen die Sozialisten!"

That is why I think, you can call it a political organization, too.

The Social Democrats had an organization to fight against all enemies (Monarchists, KPD, NSDAP) of the Weimarer Republik. It was the Reichsbanner! And the Reichsbanner had an own para military section to fight against SA, RFB, Wehrwolf, Stahlhelm. That section was called Schufo = Schutzformation. Here is a Schufo member id card!

PS: I had already posted a Schufo armband in posting#2.

          Hello Larry

"...you say the belt buckle in the musiker photo is "non approved." Who made these buckles and why were they worn..."

From what I can gather, the chaps at Der Stahlhof in Magdeburg officially approved only three buckles - the steel and green painted "Der Stahlhelm", "Jung Stahlhelm" and "Land Sturm 1924". Others and the more common "Front Heil" design buckles, actually pre date.

          Regards,

          David

Thanks Sergeant 08 for the information and showing the Schufo id card.
Also thanks to David for the information regarding the Stahlhelm belt buckle and the link to the belt buckle site.

My immediate thoughts about the SDP were that they would eventually come into collision with the NSDAP after it came into power.

A quick web check shows that the SDP was banned in 1933 and its leaders arrested and sent to concentration camps, most likely as political prisoners.

I have only one Kyffhauserbund portrait at the moment.
It shows a proud veteran in uniform with tie pin, swaztika armband and wearing a WW1 board with medals.

            Cheers,
            Larry

Most of the organizations, which we know from the Weimarer Republik, did not exist after 1933. But not all! The Deutscher Reichskriegerbund Kyffhäuser for example, was converted in the NS-Reichskriegerbund (Kyffhäuserbund) e.V..

Another photo with some confusing details! The father is a Stahlhelm member, the boys with HJ armbands. But I think the boy on the left side wore a buckle of the Scharnhorstbund (youth organization in the Weimarer Republik) and the boy on the right side? Imperial buckle Hessen, I think!

That is correct. It is the best source, because there are a few variants out there. A lot of things in the collection of Armeemuseum der DDR came directly from RFB members and you can be sure in the catalogue are original items.

Before you want to buy a new item for your collection, you have the possibility to look in the catalogue and you can compare the items.

Freikorps traditions! Organizations of veterans played an important role in the Weimarer Republik. Most of those organizations supported political parties and some of their traditions and symbols survived the year 1933.
