By the way, does anyone have a photo of Max Amann wearing the Coburg Badge? The extremely luxurious (and huge) book "Max Amann - Ein Leben fuer Fuehrer und Volk", done in 1941 to commemorate Max's 50th birthday, has numerous photos of him in uniform. In every picture he's wearing his GPB and his Blood Order (usually the medal and the ribbon)...but not once do you see him with the Coburg Badge. Oddly, the detailed chronology of his life in this book omits all mention of Coburg, and it's not mentioned in the text either. I have no idea why he wouldn't be seen wearing the prestigious Coburg Badge in these photos...

Thanks Jeff posting these great pictures from the 10th anniversary celebrations of the Kampf um Coburg. The importance of the 1922 event can't be underestimated to the early survival of the Party.

So, it appears there were only a few names added via DAL info?
        Erich

Erich, Mark Y. had reported that Fritz Weitzel was recorded in his Personalakte as having received the Coburg Badge. Not only is it marked on his file card, but he reported having the badge in an SS questionnaire dated 1936. He reported joining the SA in 1923, which does not answer the Coburg question. He belonged to the early SAJ before entering the adult SA (birthdate is April 1904).

There is no other mention of the Coburg Badge in Weitzel's file besides the marking on the card and the questionnaire. He would only have been 18, but he could have joined the SA in Coburg. But he wasn't from Bavaria, where most if not all the SA men came from who joined Hitler in Coburg. So, perhaps he received it as an honorary presentation?

Joe, according to period sources, the SA that came with Hitler were from Munich.
Like the silver version of the badge, I believe that there were honorary presentations made by Hitler but I have no proof of this. It makes sense due to the fact that Hitler had made honorary awards of the GPB and Blood Order so why would the CB be any different?

By the way, regarding Oskar Koerner, I read that he joined the DAP in 1919 and was on it's governing committee under Drexler and later under Hitler as well.

Erich, in his 1943 edition, Doehle describes the Coburg march as 800 of Hitler's followers from Munich and "andern bayerischer Orten" (other Bavarian towns).

Hitler very well may have granted honorary CB's, but to Weitzel before 1936? He was an important senior SS general, but I can't imagine any particular relationship with Hitler that would have resulted in the honor. Perhaps it was from the SA OF where the CB conferral originated?

Do you think that the SA OF would have authority to award such a prestigious badge without Hitler's or the Chancellery's ok? Don't forget that this badge held the same high status as the BO. It's interesting to note that there were more than a few who show that they received the CB in their personal files but were not on the original list of 436. More questions than answers!

Erich, I was only reporting what Doehle wrote in his 1943 edition: the Coburg Badge was authorized through the OFSA.

As an aside, Weitzel's receipt of the CB is noted on his SS file card and in a questionnaire he signed found in his SS file. But none of the listings of his name in the 1934-1938 SS DALs indicate his receipt of the CB.

Joe, Weitzel as you know didn't join the party until 1925 so my guess is, he was not at Coburg. So it looks as though his award of the CB was most probably an honorary one.

I know his party entry date, but as I wrote above, he joined the SA in 1923 and was a SA youth member before that time. So..........? But he wasn't from the Bavarian area. My guess in honorary, though when is a question.

Again, just a guess, but he was probably awarded the 2nd type badge after 1936 when the CB became an official party and state award.

                          Max Amann

There is a photo of Amann wearing the Coburg badge on the ahf. I can't post it here.

Here is the LIFE photo that Matt refers to of Amann wearing his CB. Thanks Matt for the heads up on the photo! Erich

Yes, thanks for that image! Max wrote his reminiscences of the Coburg event for "Der SA-Mann, " October 23, 1937 - "Marsch der 800 in Coburg". I don' thave this issue - yet!

Here's a photo of Josef Berchtold at the 10th Anniversary of the 1923 Putsch. Is he wearing a CB on his Brown Shirt? Hard to tell. I found another NS publication which says he did receive the badge too.

Jeff, if you find any other info regarding the Alte Kampfer in your research, please post, because anything new related to either the Battle of Coburg or the Putsch is of major interest.
