I always wondered how the CB was actually awarded and after reading the book "I knew Hitler" by Kurt Ludecke, he states the Hitler personally awarded the badge to each of those who participated in the March/Battle at the 10yr anniversary in Coburg. According to Kurt Ludecke he was at Coburg during the March and took part in the street battles but his name is not on the recipients list that I could find.

That's interesting, Erich -- I just checked Robin Lunsden's CB Recipient list and did not find Kurt Ludecke there...

What's interesting is that he was in the first train car with Hitler, Graf, Rosenberg and Ekert to Coburg. He wrote a whole chapter on the event descibing the battles , politics and the importance of the march to the young NSDAP. A very good read from a book published in 1937!

I've had the good fortune to be able to add one of the super rare Coburg porcelain pieces to my collection recently, pin is missing and it appears as though it was attached to something in the past as there is a slight red residue on the reverse, probably been glued on the front or inside a photo album is my guess. Perfect condition on the front,no damage.

The pins on these are extremely fragile, haven't come across one w/o an issue.

Sorry but my camera is on the fritz, the pin attachment on mine matches Koen's except that it's brass so I think that Koen's badge has the original pin.

So Jon, I think it's time that you add a 1st type CB to your collection. Hey, how many awards are out there that Hitler actually personally awarded?

Here's another photo of the CB in wear. This pic is of Willi Wiedermann a member of the SD.

For anyone interested in the battle of Coburg and the badge, a must read is Kurt Ludeke's book "I Knew Hitler" published in 1937. IMO, it's the best book out there on the early party and Coburg. Not easy to find but well worth it!

Right you are, Erich! My hardcover British First Edition was published in 1938 by Jarrolds Publishers (London) Ltd (I believe the First USA Edition was published by E. Schribner's Sons, NYC in 1937), but for those who are perhaps less interested in such esoteric editions, there are now both soft and hardcover editions newly-published and available through book-search sites such as Bookfinder.com. One is by Warwick Coda Books Ltd, UK (2011) and another by Archive Media Publishing Ltd, UK (2011 & 2012).

Of special interest is Ludecke's dedication: "In memory of Captain Ernst Roehm and Gregor Strasser and many other Nazis who were betrayed, murdered, and traduced in their graves." -- what a dedication!! Thanks for reminding us of this historic work, Erich.

Many have wondered if the Coburg badge was awarded in a case because none have ever been seen. After reading Ludeke's book and being a first hand account of the event, there would not have been a reason for a case due to Hitler actually handing out the badge to each of the aprox. 436 recipients on the anniversary of the event in 1932. The CB was one of the very few awards actually handed out to recipients by the Fuhrer which makes it quite unique.
