Most likely he is a war reporter serving with a panzer unit - especially having the extra touch of signing the photo - sometimes the photographer signs like that but I would bet in this case that he has signed the photo as a presentation - if you can figure out his signature, he probably he had a media career after the war (if he survived).

Clearly a microphone, and I agree with Mr. Clemens - he very well may have been a reporter. Could also have been providing a voice over for a reel of film, but the pose, composition, lighting and quality of the photograph all suggest to me that this shot was purposely staged.

I would say a prewar training block (2 hours or so) in terrain movement because none of the men have awards and no one has field equipment, not even a canteen.
