Very interesting thread! I really like these now-and-then themes! I was in Volgograd (Old Stalingrad) myself in 2009. I would have loved to explore a bit more but my travelling mate was not very interested. At least we went to some museums and saw the great monument of mother Russia.

After Stalingrad Russian and German prisoners constructed the channel between Volga and Don. Don became much wider. But the high right coast allows to define the right place unmistakably.
