The grandfather of my ex-wife (the Great-Grandfather of my children) was a member of the 7. Infanterie Regiment. I have been researching him since 1984 and finally have gotten my hands on his Wehrpass and other items. I'm doing this for the sake of our family history.
His name was Rolf Paul Günther Heimhalt. He was an Oberfeldwebel and platoon leader in the 9. Komapanie, 7. Infanterie Regiment, 252. Infanterie Division. He was killed in action on 22 March 1943 SE of Smolensk near Vrasny Wisselki.
He was apparently awarded the EK I for his actions on the day he died.
I can generally understand this letter from his Company Commander, but I want to get it exactly translated for my children. Would anyone care to help?
I have a copy of the Regimental diary from that day, as well as a complete order of battle of the Soviet forces engaging them...but finally I've seen this letter and have scans of his Wehrpass. It's exciting.

Her husband was the best company leader the writer had. There was a large soviet incursion into the German lines. Her husband heroically cleared everything out, but in the last instant was killed by a bullet directly through the heart, death was instantaneous/painless. (Most letters use some sort of line like this...they never say "he bled profusely, screaming for his mother, with fear in his eyes, for 15 minutes until he died".
