Just picked up a WW1 German Sterbebild (death card) of a man with a medic's armband.

It indicates he is a sanitätsfahrer in the Bavarian Field Hospital 127.

Is it correct to translate the literal "sanitary driver" as ambulance driver?

                    Hey fellas,

I know this letter is pretty long and boring, but it was my great grandfathers when he was in Russia. Could anyone take the time to translate this one? If its too long even a summary would be great...

unfortunately i cannot get better scans of the back side (my grandmothers scanner was annoying enough...)

                    thanks in advance

Letter to mom; Page 1: he starts out by thanking her for 3 cards/letters, and some cookies. Also for birthday wishes. He's sending her a couple of päckenkarten (maybe smokes?) but he says they only get 2 a month. It's a Sunday afternoon, and they've already done their work. And they're going to spend couple hours later singing, if the mood hits them.

Page 2: begins with him saying they had to eat some low-grade bread with the good tea they had. (this scan is a bit harder to read, as it's smaller)

Div. Gef. Std. "Division Gefecht Stand" - More or less the positions occupied by the unit on or near the front. They weren't allowed to write exactly where they were.

I think I can help Hank a bit with the translated of the word "Päckchenmarke"

                            (not "Päckchenkarte" !).

A Päckchenmarke was like a stamp which allowed the soldier to sent/receive parcels.

                                the first letter:
                                Liebe Eltern und Gunther
Will euch heute schnell ein kleines Briefchen schreiben.
Recht viele Grüsse an alle Nachbarn recht viele Grüsse an Kibs(?) (2 other names?) Auf Wiedersehen!

Dear Parents and Gunther, just wanted to write a quick letter. I'm healthy and doing well. Hope the same for you. We've been traveling 8 days and still not at destination, couldn't write during that time. We're having (or experiencing) a (not sure what the word "hitzl" is...maybe it's "hitze", or heatwave) that's really something. I'll close now for today. Your son, Basti. Heartfelt greetings on all the neighbors and (some named friends).

2nd letter: Really about the same thing...he confirms receiving 4 letters from them. Still a heatwave...10 days underway...he saw alot underway...almost the same as first letter.

                                best
                                Hank
