    Chris.

For your interest, here is the back of the badge.

I have only seen one other in 35 years...............the one in David Littlejohn's books.

This badge is rarer than almost any other item of Third Reich militaria, but most collectors wouldn't give it a second look because it doesn't seem that special.

Equally rare is the little VDS Sport Badge, for the Hungarian Volksdeutsche.

Again, I've only ever seen one other example of this in 35 years.

And the letter itself - written in Hungarian IMO. Very weird, since the family claimed the guy was a Romanian citizen of German descent....

        Cheers,

        Al

PS - perhaps some member whose is knowledgeable in Hungarian may lend a hand here.

Hi I've transleted the letter form the former post. I hope you like it
          sorry for my poor english

          Dear Sweetheart!

I'm letting you know, that I've received the letter wich you were sending on the 12th of december a half hour ago. At least I'm getting some news about you, cause the last letter I've received was written in November. Please tell me, why are you putting so much stamps on the the letter? i will receive it anyway, and not at least you can spare a lot of money...
Most probably you will hear more news about me sooner, from the guys who are now on leave at home.
It was promised to me also, that I can travel home for a while, as soon as the others are coming back. But whaterver could happen...I've also written a petition to (unreadable)
I'm getting your letters always opened, may they read it aswell, but I do not care about it anymore.
I've mentioned you in my former letter, that at christmasstime we had a lot of joy, and we became a new instructor.
How good it would be to spend the holy night at home, but I was always such unlucky, just like my mom(most probably he is referring to his mother but it's also unreadable). but don't be sad the sun will shine again on us.
On the first day of the new year we had to look after what to do with the palinka (raw hungarian spirit) wich remained. In the last two weeks we were just doing our labor duty and some training. On the 6th of January I could'nt hold the epiphany cause I was in duty on the whole day. I've received two letters also, one from Nándi and one from Tamás. I've answered them immediately, they will receive it between the 15th and 20th of January. I'm getting a lot of letters from Miklós aswell.
If I cannot go home, i will write you an other letter, pls do not write me till you are not receiving my letter.
I'm healthy, and thats what I'm wishing to all of you. The winter is not so cold and snowy like at home, here are growing totally different kind of trees and plants. May we will have a light winter.
See you and a lot of greetings on everybody!

          Tata

(at the end the text is unreadable (for me), but he is writing something about the sent cake, that was eaten by somebody else, and the girl should not send them anymore, rather giving it to Pali?)
          bye bye and good night

          thats all...
