Bringing back this old thread. I found this still on a newsreel from the last assembly of the Fascist party during the RSI in MIlan.

I believe this is an Italiane SS NCO. He appears to have red boards and tresse and black collar tabs. Notice the cuffand. Maybe an "For the Honor of Italy" or "Per L'onore d' Italia" issued to paratroopers of Folgore from the begining. It apears he wears one pip on his black collor tab similar to Officers withmirror rank on both sides. The photo is somewhat grainy.
Maybe someone who knows how to enhance it can try to do it.

In the last days of war, many members of Italian SS, Black Brigades, GNR and X MAS was captured and executed by partisans and after the war also, for two or three years, members of fascist army was killed by italian communist and ex partisans. The story of these men is well told in an italian book "Il sangue dei vinti" (in english "The Blood of the losers"), by Giampaolo Pansa.

This is my little contribute to this thread: this is the list of the salary for italian SS divided by rank.

The SS Officer in the foreground, far right with the EKII ribbon is Pio Filippani Ronconi.

                        Chiming in a little late...
I just found this thread update. Interesting photo Dennis.
I agree it could be the "Per L'onore d' Italia" ribbon on the cuff! (the Nembo paratroopers wore in on the left cuff as far as I remember.... )
and an SS guy would (unofficially) wear it on that side also I would think (SS style) ...but I don't think this is a reversed negative...
Either way very nice! Here blown up but the quality gets bad...blurry.
Definately mirrored SS ranks not unusual with Italian SS!

In case anyone doudted the Italiane SS Legione was issued German style dog tags here are a couple of pics from a Luce War time Newsreel

The photos are of early Italiane SS Legioneres being inspected by SS General Schimpke. They are wearing Red insignia and most have on Italian Army uniform and kit.

Same footage with more uniform shots, Schimpke is discussing the Legioneres beard during the inspection. The insignia is all red including the backing on the chevron. Notice the man next to the bearded Legioneres right appears to be wearing a SS overseas cap with an Italian SS eagle on the side and skull on front.

THe Italian SS officer with the EKII ribbon at the right is Count Pio Fillipani Ronconi and this photo was taken after the Anzio/Nettuno battles since Count Ronconi has not wore the Anthroposofia kragenspiegln which he himself designed.

Italians who were in the SS divisions such as LAH/Das Reich and/or those who were Eastern front veterans who allowed to wear black SS tabs/runes kragenspiegln

Italians who formed the Italian SS legion before the Anzio/Nettuno battles were NOT allowed to wear the black tabs but instead, with red tabs. It is only after the bravery of the Italian SS legionnaires at the Anzio/Nettuno battles which impressed Himmler that he finally allowed them to wear the black SS tabs
