The Italian soldiers were very weak in the front, did they become braver in waffen-ss? -
Italian soldiers werebraver than germans sometimes and in africa they saved germans during the retreating.They lacked of modern equipment.

They existed. More than 20.000 Italians applied for enrollment in the 29th division. Quite a few of them also were member of the Karstjager Division There is an Italian book which is very well done dealing with Italian Waffen SS. The title is "Pensare Volere Sentire" (or something similar). There are tons of nice pics in there. Try with google and digit "Pio Filippani Ronconi" and you'll get a nice picture of an Italian SS soldier wearing a mix of Italian and German gearOriginally posted by lelezComment

No, although it closely recalls the emblem of Falange Espanola it is the offical emblem of the 29th division. Definitively it didn't have a wide diffusion. Also, it is quite rare to see German helmets used by the Italian volunteers. The standard Italian M33 was the one generally issuedOriginally posted by torra44Comment

I hope this young guy survived the war and spent a lot of time with his kid.
Quite easy to make jokes about the Italians' military value.
But don't forget that many italians joined the SS and the other RSI units when it was already clear what the final result was going to be!
They just wanted to stay on the same side they started and many of them paid with their life their sense of honour.
If this is does not mean to be brave I don't know what brave meansComment

The fact of the matter is that many Italian service personnel performed their duties, in World War 2, with remarkable valour. One need only look at Decima Mas to gain an appreciation of the quality of the opposition that we faced in the Mediterranean in the period 1941-1944. I would also note that Italian gunners (by British account) were held in high regard by enemy and friendly alike.
