And now a little fast forward to october 18th 2006, when I exhumed the bodies of 14 Germans killed at Villeneuve, including the dead man from the picture.
Only 2 skulls found in the grave had damage to the temple area.
I think this is the remains of the skull of the man in the picture. If he was hit by a BAR bullet in the temple, it probably caused fractures to all the facial bones, and the big fracture going all around visible here. The skull was still in a mdl 42 helmet with chicken wire remains. The dead man in the picture also looks like his helmet has camo.
I only found fragments of the face.

Whoa... I cannot even begin to imagine what that must have felt like for you, Jean-Loup. It must have been... emotional, or at least very intense. I totally understand why you consider it to be the mother of all KIA photos.

I think the damage to the skull is post mortem, maybe from when the body was trown into the grave, or when the guy fell after being shot.

Would that post mortem damage include the damage to the jaw bone as well? Or is that peri mortem?

I will leave these pictures here since I had put them there... Exhumation of german soldiers at Villeneuve-Loubet, France on oct 18th 2006. They were KIA by the First Special Service Force on aug 26th 1944.

The second day it was raining. To do the dig, there was no time, money, or anything, but I still managed to get most of the info out of it.
